Professional Reviews For This Wine

The 2006 Cepparello is a super classic wine. It brings together the best elements of the house style in its breathtaking aromatics, delineated fruit and striking overall balance. All of the elements are in the right place for the 2006 to develop into a spectacular wine. The 2006 stands apart for its nuance, depth and overall detail. Juicy red cherries, raspberries, rose petals and licorice build to the huge, dramatic finish. The 2006 is one of the all-time great Cepparellos. It bears more than a passing resemblance to the stunning 1988. The 2006 has blossomed beautifully in bottle over the last few years, and it is now clear I underestimated its potential.

($70; 14% alcohol) Light, deep red. Knockout nose of floral red berries, red cherry syrup, coffee and minerals. Then suave, silky and plump, with harmonious acidity giving life and definition to the raspberry, plum and delicate licorice flavors. Features wonderful sweetness and pliancy, and finishes subtle and sophisticated, with a light coffee note. Better and more varietally accurate than the excellent '07.

Offers rose and citrus fruit notes, with dried cherry and some earth character. Full-bodied, with soft, silky tannins and a fruity finish. Refined and racy, like a fine Brunello. Sangiovese.

Red berry nose with an earthy aroma. Medium bodied and well balanced with berries and plum flavor. Very long finish with silky tannins but a touch acidic.

About This Producer

The estate is run by Paolo de Marchi, who has been turning out significant and stunning wines for years. The "Cepparello" is dense and intense, but has a subtle finesse that frames lovely, dense, black fruit purity. In addition to its classic Sangiovese-based wines, Isole e Olena also produces Vin Santo, "L'Eremo" Syrah, as well as several new world varieties under the Collezione de Marchi label.

Wine Varietal: Sangiovese

Italyâ??s most popular grape, Sangiovese is the top grape used in Tuscany including Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and many of Italyâ??s â??Super Tuscans.â?? At least 14 clones of Sangiovese exist which are grouped into the Sangiovese grosso and Sangiovese piccolo families. Sangiovese thrives in a warm climate and consists of over 10% of Italyâ??s vineyard acreage (covering almost a quarter million acres). Over the past decade Sangiovese has become increasingly popular and successful in California as well. Typical descriptors for Sangiovese include candied or dried cherry, citrus, leather, violets and tea.
