Professional Reviews For This Wine

Vinfolio | Rating: 95

Nuts & Bolts is a blend of four vineyard sources: Larner, White Hawk, Laetitia, and Watch Hill. Very pretty aromas of cassis, white pepper, violets and cocoa. Polished and round entry of violet pastille, graphite, dense plum, vibrant red raspberry and blackberry on the palate with beautiful chocolate texture on the finish. It requires several hours of decanting before enjoying.

Way too much alcohol and heat. Bluberry cream with blackberries and some heavily peppered beef jerky. The alcohol was too high to be comfortable to drink.

About This Producer

Central Coast native Russell From took an unconventional path to becoming a winemaker. An Agriculture major from Cal Poly- San Luis Obispo, he slid into the winery scene nearly by accident. It wasn't long before he met his eventual business partner, McPrice Myers (of Barrel 27) and discussions of making wine together, and separately, began in earnest. Russell's label, named in honor of his grandfather, was launched with the 2001 vintage and immediately captured the attention of critics. He uses world-class Central Coast vineyards such as Larner and White Hawk to produce Syrah, Grenache, Roussanne and Viognier. Production is approximately 1000 cases.

Wine Varietal: Syrah

While the rest of the world is calling it "Syrah," Australia and South Africa stick to "Shiraz," their name for the same grape. Previously it was thought that the name Shiraz originated from a city in Persia where the Syrah grape was believed to have originated. Recently U.S. and French researchers demystified the name debate when they discovered that the Syrah grape was indigenous to France. Intense, robust and sometimes referred to as "manly," Syrah grows principally in the Northern Rhone. The spicy, peppery grape also grows abundantly in Australia, South Africa, and California, where it takes on a softer, thicker character than its French version. Typical descriptors for Syrah include blackberry, dark chocolate, mint, eucalyptus, smoked meat, black pepper, liquorice, and cloves.
