Mascarello's 2006 Barolo Monprivato is incredibly primary at this stage. The 2006 is an explosive Monprivato endowed with layers of ripe red fruit backed up by firm, muscular tannins that speak with great eloquence. I expect the 2006 to go through a period of stubbornness - as it often does - but it should begin to show well at around age ten or so. From time to time, the wine shows glimpses of its nobility. The 2006 is shaping up to be a profound Monprivato. The only thing it needs is time. This is a fabulous effort from Mascarello.

Medium palish red; less saturated than the 2007. Less fruity and floral and more earthy/spicy on the nose than the '07; exuded notes of red berry liqueur and underbrush with air. Then tighter and more penetrating in the mouth, conveying more force than the '07 and a much more austere texture. Seems large but at the same time lower in alcohol. This very precise, powerfully structured wine finishes dry, long and youthfully imploded, with subtle spice and floral nuances. More classic than the 2007 but also far less agreeable today: forget this one in the cellar for a decade, at which point it may make my early rating look stingy.

An elegant style, with a hint of wild herbs giving way to strawberry, eucalyptus, licorice and mineral. Though structured, this is deftly balanced, with a mouthwatering finish and a fine, savory aftertaste.

About This Producer

For over a century and a half, the Mascarello family has been tending vineyards in the Piedmont region. The "Monprivato" vineyard (located in the village of Castiglione Falletto) is the crown jewel for this estate and enjoys a prime location. It resides on a hillside composed of clayey-silt marl with elements of limestone. The grapes are treated with the utmost attention from the moment they are harvested to the moment they are bottled. "Monprivato" is only created in the best of vintages.

Wine Varietal: Nebbiolo

Big, dark, and bold, Nebbiolo is a robust variety with heavy tannins and a sometimes bitter profile. While areas outside Italy (Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, California, and South Africa) have begun cultivating Nebbiolo, the Italian region of Piedmont is where it reaches its greatest height. It is here, the historic home to Nebbiolo, where the finest Barolos and Barbarescos are produced. Many winemakers have compared this grape to Pinot Noir for its difficult growing habits and unpredictable cellar and aging behavior. Typical descriptors for Nebbiolo include roses, violets, tar, wild herbs, cherries, raspberries, truffles, and tobacco.
