Deep ruby-purple. Roasted black cherry, chocolate and stony minerality on the nose, with a pretty violet note. Sweet, bright and focused, this juicy, elegantly styled syrah offers lively black fruit and salty smoked beef flavors, if not quite the fleshiness or complexity of the best syrahs from the Rh o ne.

Easily the hugest wine of the day, it was closed and funky at the outset. Very dark purple with slow legs. Lots of acid on the palate. As this opened up it revealed power, and structure. Clearly an Italian wine it showed earth, tar old world characteristics. Very extracted, throwing sediment even at <6 years old. Spent time decanting but could have used more. For all its weight, never pretentious and paired so well with the food. Toward end meal started show some great sweet characteristics - again very Italian - not like a Northern Rhone nor a Cal-Rhone. This wine will keep going for years.

Great nose of bluberry and blackberry. On opening, it had great tannins and body but those were lost after decanting. A very good wine but finishes a little weak.

About This Producer

Located in the picturesque Florentine hillsides just outside the pastoral town of Panzano, Fontodi is the spectacular domain of the Manetti family. The vineyards are located in the valley of the Conca d'Oro (Golden Basin) and enjoy a cool climate and marl-rich soil that gives the fruit a signature high-toned, red cherry profile. The wines are studies in the profound elegance and muted power of the ancient Sangiovese grape. The "Flaccianello" is one of the original Super Tuscans (originated in 1981) that uses 100% Sangiovese from an eponymous single vineyard of superior quality. This is an incredible collectible that represents a seamless juxtaposition of traditional Tuscan flavor and New World richness.

Wine Varietal: Syrah

While the rest of the world is calling it "Syrah," Australia and South Africa stick to "Shiraz," their name for the same grape. Previously it was thought that the name Shiraz originated from a city in Persia where the Syrah grape was believed to have originated. Recently U.S. and French researchers demystified the name debate when they discovered that the Syrah grape was indigenous to France. Intense, robust and sometimes referred to as "manly," Syrah grows principally in the Northern Rhone. The spicy, peppery grape also grows abundantly in Australia, South Africa, and California, where it takes on a softer, thicker character than its French version. Typical descriptors for Syrah include blackberry, dark chocolate, mint, eucalyptus, smoked meat, black pepper, liquorice, and cloves.
