Professional Reviews For This Wine

Wine Spectator | Rating: 99

Shows excellent color and richness for a Sangiovese, with aromas of sultana, coffee, toasty oak and vanilla bean. Full-bodied, with masses of fruit and chewy tannins. The concentration and depth of fruit and layers of tannins are breathtaking. A blockbuster.

The 2006 Flaccianello della Pieve is monumental, as it has been since the very beginning. Smoke, black cherries, plums, incense, licorice and tar are some of the many notes that burst from the glass in this powerful wine. The 2006 has fruit and structure to burn. It is going to be an absolutely fabulous wine to follow over the coming years, but patience is key. A huge, explosive finish rounds things out in style.

(100% sangiovese; 15% alcohol) Good full ruby-red. Initially reticent nose hints at flint and herbs, then becomes sweeter with air, displaying ripe red cherry and dark plum aromas. Dense, pure and rich on entry, with highly focused, very pure flavors of minerals, red cherry, dark plum and black pepper. Finishes very long, with bright acidity giving this the wine a slightly austere quality. A very impressive sangiovese that offers a gorgeous seamless quality and huge depth. You'll be enjoying this for another 25 years easily. (Vinifera Imports, Ronkonkoma, NY)

About This Producer

Located in the picturesque Florentine hillsides just outside the pastoral town of Panzano, Fontodi is the spectacular domain of the Manetti family. The vineyards are located in the valley of the Conca d'Oro (Golden Basin) and enjoy a cool climate and marl-rich soil that gives the fruit a signature high-toned, red cherry profile. The wines are studies in the profound elegance and muted power of the ancient Sangiovese grape. The "Flaccianello" is one of the original Super Tuscans (originated in 1981) that uses 100% Sangiovese from an eponymous single vineyard of superior quality. This is an incredible collectible that represents a seamless juxtaposition of traditional Tuscan flavor and New World richness.

Wine Varietal: Sangiovese

Italyâ??s most popular grape, Sangiovese is the top grape used in Tuscany including Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and many of Italyâ??s â??Super Tuscans.â?? At least 14 clones of Sangiovese exist which are grouped into the Sangiovese grosso and Sangiovese piccolo families. Sangiovese thrives in a warm climate and consists of over 10% of Italyâ??s vineyard acreage (covering almost a quarter million acres). Over the past decade Sangiovese has become increasingly popular and successful in California as well. Typical descriptors for Sangiovese include candied or dried cherry, citrus, leather, violets and tea.
