Very perfumed and beautiful, showing blackberry and raspberry aromas, with hints of vanilla. Deep and complex. Full-bodied, with chewy tannins and a long, powerful finish. Excellent for the vintage. Best after 2015. 10,500 cases made

This classic, backward, tannic St.-Julien is made in the style of the 1996 and 1986. The 2006 Ducru Beaucaillou possesses a dense purple color along with a sweet perfume of graphite, black raspberries, cassis, licorice, and subtle toasty oak. Despite their prominent place in the wine's structure, the sweetness of the tannins and the full-bodied, muscular style suggest exceptional patience will be required. This is a big, substantial, meaty, masculine wine built for considerable longevity.

($165) Bright red-ruby. Deep, vibrant aromas of currant, sour cherry, graphite, cedar and licorice. Sappy, suave and energetic, with terrific verve and framing acidity to the tightly wound flavors of dark cherry, currant, spices and minerals. Wonderfully primary and penetrating Saint-Julien, almost painfully intense yet weightless. Finishes very long and fine, with terrific definition. An infant today, with a long life ahead of it.

Premieur purchase. Opened 7 hours, double decanted. Dark, reflective and pooling color. Beautiful nose that was present from the moment the cork was pulled. Blue berry, vanilla cream and pine forest. Obviously young, tannic, but quite full-bodied, with tremendous promise, power and potential. Enjoyable for a young wine, but it can and will be so much more later. All the stuffing needed to kick butt for decades -- give it at least 8 more years. Beautiful Ducru, and one of the best 2006 Bordeaux.

About This Producer

Located in the appellation of Saint-Julien, Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou is named for the beautiful large stones and pebbles that cover the vineyard. These stones create ideal grape-growing conditions, as they aid in drainage, reflect sun onto the vines, and keep the ground from drying out. These conditions create the "typical" Saint-Julien wine - elegant and smooth, with a long finish. The outstanding structure of these wines gives them great aging potential as well.

The Borie family has owned the estate for the past 60 years, and still lives in the chateau. The chateau itself is unusual for Bordeaux because the house was built directly over the cellar, which means the family lives literally surrounded by their wines. The estate's second wine is called La Croix de Beaucaillou.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
