As I indicated last year, quality has improved dramatically at this estate, and the 2006 is a quintessentially elegant Bordeaux displaying a dark ruby/purple color, a lovely bouquet of forest floor, sweet cherries, cranberries, and black currants, medium body, a textured, sweet, tannic mouthfeel, and a long finish. Everything is beautifully pure as well as perfectly balanced in this outstanding effort.

($35) Deep red. Pure aromas of blackberry, violet and licorice, lifted by minty and herbal nuances. Juicy and energetic in the mouth, with spices and a light herbal quality contributing to the impression of lift and definition. Finishes with dusty tannins that seem a bit less gritty than they appeared to be a year ago from barrel.

Blackberry and sweet tobacco follow through to a medium body, with slightly aggressive tannins and a medium finish. Chewy. Needs time to mellow.

Site Blog: The Wine Forum Classically consistent, please see my past note as this is drinking just like the last bottle. BTW I opened this at 7:30am and started to drink it at 6pm through 11pm. Such a great value in Bordeaux.

Extremely unapproachable at this stage. Raw, really sour and acidic, and totally disjointed. Bitter and tannic. Is this wine ever going to be good? Don't think anything was wrong with this bottle - either this wine sucks or it's in a really awkward phase...

About This Producer

Chateau Cantemerle is an Haut-Medoc property situated along the Route des Chateaux, just north of Bordeaux. It is classified as a 5eme Cru Classe. The history of the estate goes back to the 14th century, when it belonged to the powerful lords of Blanquefort. It has gone through many changes of ownership since that time. The vineyards include Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wine is widely considered an excellent value that could be upgraded to a Third Growth. The annual production for Cantemerle is 25,000 cases and 12,500 for its second wine, Les Allees des Cantemerle.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
