Sweet red currants, cinnamon sticks, plum, Christmas cake, and allspice jump from the medium ruby/garnet colored 2006 Pinot Noir Rio Vista. This wine has tart acidity, plenty of body, and again, seems to offer intriguing spice box aromatics and medium to full-bodied flavors. Drink it over the next 5-7 years.

Great example of Cali Pinot...primary but gorgeous fruit and acidity on day 1...saved a split for day 2--> even better; now has a complexity and smoothness that really displays its pedigree well(94).

very nice burgundian style effort. Nice nose with a little barnyard. Lots of cherry cola flavors with a bumpy transition to the finish which is quite nice. However, the price point is a bit high.

About This Producer

Brewer-Clifton produces vineyard designated Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the Santa Rita Hills appellation in Santa Barbara. Greg Brewer and Steve Clifton started the winery in the early 1990s with the aim to capture the vineyards' essence in the bottle. The Santa Rita Hills' long growing seasons and diversity of marine-based soils give the wines great purity and precision. Steve also has his own label called Palmina that focuses on Italian varieties. Greg Brewer also has his own Diatom label and is the winemaker at Melville Winery.

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
