Professional Reviews For This Wine

Vinfolio | Rating: 100

The second release of Kenneth's first California Pinot Noir under his label provides plenty of evidence that last year's premiere was not a fluke. Off of the Hyde-owned Sonoma Stage site, we identified this wine last year as a significant newcomer. The winery's total production of 2006 Sonoma Stage is 146 cases.

Showing a focused graphite and vanilla nose, with flecks of Seville orange, wild strawberry and juicy cherry. The mouth feel is delicate and silky smooth leading to a mid-palate showing silky grip to the mouth-filling black cherry, spicy violet and graphite.

Site Blog: purely domestic wine report Aromas: rich nose of black cherry, carbon, licorice, root ark and cola Palate: full, seamless entry with gobs of rich suppleness on the mid palate Impression: Lots of vitality throughout finishes with smoothly defined cherry, bramble and cola

cream, caramel with some confusion. Don't know if this is beyond its time or waiting to break out.

About This Producer

Auteur concentrates on just two varietals, but produces them stunningly: Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from California and Oregon. Winemaker and owner Kenneth Juhasz and his wife and partner Laura believe that their success stems from selecting vineyards situated in cool climates as well as focusing on the masculine and feminine personalities of these two varietals. Auteur sources fruit from Willamette Valley, Sonoma Coast, Los Carneros, and Mendocino Ridge. Auteur is the only producer to share the famed Shea Vineyard "Back Block," with the grower, Shea Wine Cellars. Some outstanding Auteur vintages include the groundbreaking 2004 Donum Vineyard Chardonnay from Carneros - the first release from California vines - and the 2005 Shea Pinot Noir, Vinfolio's Wine of the Year 2006.

Auteur (French for "author" or "composer") explains that the deep orange color of their label represents their "adventurous spirit combined with the organic nature of winemaking."

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
