Professional Reviews For This Wine

Vinfolio | Rating: 95

Here is the wine that started us down the road to discovering Auteur and it is bittersweet to say it is last call on these wines, as the winery will be discontinuing the Hyland in 2007. The second consecutive 95 point score from what is now Kenneth's oldest source after four vintages. The winery's total production of Hyland in 2006 is 291 cases.

Shows a dense nose of dusty blackberry, cassis and cinnamon-sprinkled honeycomb. The palate is tightly focused with a very smooth core and acidity that comes on like a silken breeze. Finishes with pure black licorice, cherry and straight-razor thin nectarine with a hint of coffee bean.

8 hour slow-O and this was screaming good...fruit more forward than last bottle but the structure is stout. This wine is dark and cool with no sign of oak or alcohol. Will hold a long time I suspect.

Good nose and interesting flavors. Sharp acidity helped it pair well with (northern) Italian food.

About This Producer

Auteur concentrates on just two varietals, but produces them stunningly: Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from California and Oregon. Winemaker and owner Kenneth Juhasz and his wife and partner Laura believe that their success stems from selecting vineyards situated in cool climates as well as focusing on the masculine and feminine personalities of these two varietals. Auteur sources fruit from Willamette Valley, Sonoma Coast, Los Carneros, and Mendocino Ridge. Auteur is the only producer to share the famed Shea Vineyard "Back Block," with the grower, Shea Wine Cellars. Some outstanding Auteur vintages include the groundbreaking 2004 Donum Vineyard Chardonnay from Carneros - the first release from California vines - and the 2005 Shea Pinot Noir, Vinfolio's Wine of the Year 2006.

Auteur (French for "author" or "composer") explains that the deep orange color of their label represents their "adventurous spirit combined with the organic nature of winemaking."

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
