From the site immediately east of Clos de Tart and of the sliver of Bonnes Mares in the commune of Morey, Arlaud's 2006 Morey-St.-Denis Les Ruchots represents the latest rendition of what has become almost a flagship wine of this estate. Black cherry, cassis, herbal concentrates, and marine breeze-like salinity and alkalinity make for a highly expressive and distinctive nose. In the mouth, this takes invigoration for berry skins, pungent herbs, and salt, while offering ample, luscious, mouth-coating fresh fruit juiciness and a subtly creamy texture. What's more, it finishes with the sort of buoyancy, energy, and sappy persistence that accrue to some of the best wines of its vintage, as well as with a peppery note that amplifies the sense of invigoration. Plan to enjoy it over the next 7-9 years.

($70) Good full red. Complex, aromatic nose offers dark cherry, brown spices and dried flowers. At once fleshy and fresh in the mouth, with the sweet cherry and spice flavors spreading out nicely to saturate the palate. Finishes with dusty tannins that arrive late, and a soupcon of eucalyptus. Showing very well today.

(from 40+ year old vines) A ripe and deeply pitched nose features a complex blend of red and blue pinot fruit that is almost liqueur-like with lovely violet and earth nuances that continue onto the round, rich, suave and generous flavors that possess good volume and excellent balance if less complexity than one might expect.

Tasting note: Ruchots is in my estimation the finest of the Morey 1ers and this example will only serve to reinforce that point of view as it again delivers grand cru like quality. A riper and more deeply pitched nose features a complex blend of red and blue pinot fruit with lovely violet and earth nuances that continue onto the round, rich, suave and generous flavors that possess good volume and excellent balance plus fine aging potential. As usual, this and the Combottes are the class of the 1ers chez Arlaud.

About This Producer

The dedication of the Arlaud family - father Herve, son Cyprien and daughter Bertille - has substantially improved this domaine each year. Their labor-intensive practices of hand pruning, stringent green harvesting and the use of a horse and plow instead of a tractor have produced the finest wines of the domaine's history.

The wines are textbook expressions of each terroir and are remarkably complex and richly balanced. Look for the domaine to continue to build its strong reputation in vintages ahead.

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
