The 2005 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova is quite a bit darker and richer than the straight Brunello. Cherries, plums, spices and French oak meld together beautifully in this silky, textured red. In 2005 the Tenuta Nuova boasts fabulous overall balance in a fairly restrained style for this bottling. Kirsch, roses and spices linger on the dark, enveloping finish. This is a terrific effort from Casanova di Neri. The Tenuta Nuova is made from vineyards in Le Cetine and Pietradonice, both located in the southern part of Montalcino.

Exhibits blueberry and vanilla cream, with zabaglione undertones. Full-bodied, with velvety, chewy tannins and a long aftertaste of sweet fruit. Solid and rich for the vintage.

When an estate makes good wine in a somewhat off vintage the result is a wine that's more accessible sooner and that's what this gorgeous thing was! Decanted for ~30-45 prior to drinking (while we had ouzo), the nose sang immediately and the depth was fantastic. The mouth feel is great, smooth and creamy, the finish is dry but your mouth is just filled with the perfume of the red berry fruit, mint, earth, oak, herbs. One of the best Sangiovese I've had in a long time. Even more air would be have been better - went great with the soutzoukakia (meatballs) in red sauce. You can tell the Italians make this for the food. Will probably keep kicking for 5 years. If this is the 2005, how will the 100pt 2006 be? Can't wait!

Okay, bit heavy on the glycerin, slight heat and still pretty one dimensional and perhaps some cab in there?

About This Producer

The Casanova di Neri farm began in 1971 when Giovanni Neri bought a large estate within the territory of Montalcino. Over the years their continuing goal has been the search for and purchasing of land which they believe to be optimal for growing high quality grapes. The result is that today they have about 36 hectares of vineyards divided between four quite distinct areas: il Pietradonice in Castelnuovo dell'Abate, le Cetine in Sant'Angelo in Colle, il Cerretalto and il Fiesole near the farmhouse of the same name facing Montalcino.

Recent accolades include a perfect WS 100-point score for the 2001 Brunello di Montalcino Cerretalto and WS Wine of the Year honors for the 2001 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova.

Wine Varietal: Sangiovese

Italyâ??s most popular grape, Sangiovese is the top grape used in Tuscany including Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and many of Italyâ??s â??Super Tuscans.â?? At least 14 clones of Sangiovese exist which are grouped into the Sangiovese grosso and Sangiovese piccolo families. Sangiovese thrives in a warm climate and consists of over 10% of Italyâ??s vineyard acreage (covering almost a quarter million acres). Over the past decade Sangiovese has become increasingly popular and successful in California as well. Typical descriptors for Sangiovese include candied or dried cherry, citrus, leather, violets and tea.
