One of the finest wines I've tasted from Delia Viader, the 2005 Proprietary Red Liquid Cashmere is a blend of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon and 31% Cabernet Franc aged 24 months in French oak. She seems to have built in more texture and richness without losing the complexity and suppleness that these wines possess. Loads of blueberry, raspberry and sweet black cherry fruit, forest floor and floral notes are all present in this wine, made from a hillside vineyard on Howell Mountain. A beautiful integration of acidity, alcohol, wood and tannin are worthy of high marks. This beauty is delicious and complex already, and because of its impressive equilibrium, promises to hold for at least another 10-15 years.

($90; a 69/31 blend of cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc) Good full ruby-red. Highly complex nose offers currant, plum, blueberry, bitter chocolate and herbs. Suave, silky and downright creamy in the mouth, with lovely breadth and palate coverage. Fresh but harmonious acidity gives this a rather sophisticated texture. In comparison to the easier, fruit-forward 2004, this one is more characterized by its bite and structure.

Sleek and elegantly styled, with spicy currant, sage, dusty berry, mineral and pleasant herb and sage notes. Well-balanced, even delicate and detailed. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

Site Blog: purely domestic wine report 14% alcohol, 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Cabernet Franc Aromas: chocolate, prune and currant with hints of tobacco Palate: smooth and ripe on entry with a slightly firm mid-palate leading into a supple dark berry finish enhanced by nicely textured chocolate. Impression:This provides a nice value for an upscale wine dedicated to special meals.

Deep garnet in color. Aromas of dark chocolate and tobacco. Fine tannins with flavors of bright red fruit and currant. Very nice effort.

About This Producer

VIADER is a leading Napa Valley winery estate established in 1986 by Delia Viader, and recognized for consistently producing high quality red wines. The estate is located 1200 feet above the Napa Valley floor just north-east of St. Helena on the steep, rocky slopes of Howell Mountain.

Since its inaugural vintage in 1989, the VIADER Proprietary blend has featured Cabernet Sauvignon with a significant component of Cabernet Franc. The second lable "V" is exclusively Petit Verdot. The estate VIADER Syrah is a blend of Barossa and Hermitage clones. DARE by Viader focuses on single varieties from select vineyards in the Napa Valley blended with their estate fruit. DARE Cabernet Sauvignon features fruit sourced from Lewelling Vineyards in St. Helena. DARE Cabernet Franc uses fruit from Stagecoach Vineyards in Oakville. DARE Tempranillo is made from a Ribera del Duero clonal selection sourced from the northeast side of the Napa Valley. VIADER also produces a very limited amount of Cabernet-based dry DARE Rose.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
