This is another of the truly profound 2005 Cabernet Sauvignons. Of course, this is an historic producer, a great estate on the back streets of St. Helena that has been at the top of their game for many a year. Their wine always has a Chateau Margaux-like elegance and finesse, allied to pure, intense Napa fruit. The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon, coming from a vineyard that was first established at the western edge of the Mayacamas foothills in 1882, has a beautiful, pure blueberry and blackcurrant liqueur-like note, subtle floral underpinnings and distant background new oak. There is a touch of minerality as well in this full-bodied, gorgeously textured and stunningly opulent and rich, yet elegant style of Cabernet Sauvignon from St. Helena. The alcohol is relatively modest at 14.1%. It's certainly showing exceptionally well at present, but promises to continue to age well for 15-20 more years.

($130) Good full ruby-red. Expressive nose offers cassis, minerals, violet and brown spices. Suave on entry, then supple, sweet and seamless in the middle, without any impression of weight. This boasts lovely inner-mouth energy and lift. The sweet tannins arrive late, allowing the dark fruit and floral flavors to expand in the mouth. A highly successful vintage for this wine.

Tight and well-structured, with a firm, compact, dense mix of spicy currant, black cherry, plum and wild berry fruit that's pure and focused, revealing more subtle flavor nuances as this unfolds, along with depth and complexity.

After a 3 hour decant: Raspberry, pepper, lead pencil, anise. Moderately long finish. Medium weight. Balanced with tannins that are a little drying on the finish. Parker gives this a 97 and says it will continue to age well. I'm not so sure, but did enjoy it plenty this evening.it's

Consumed at Backhouse LA. Nice wine, but not blown away.

About This Producer

Spottswoode is a family-owned historic vineyard and winery renowned for its exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. Established in 1882 by George Schonewald, the estate is distinguished by the historic Victorian home depicted on the Spottswoode label. Spottswoode was christened by Mrs. Albert Spotts, who owned the property from 1910 until its purchase in 1972 by Mary Weber Novak and her late husband, Dr. Jack Novak. The first Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon was produced in 1982, exactly one hundred years after the estate's founding.

The Novak family is committed to producing wines that faithfully reflect their grape origins. Each Spottswoode wine is known for its refined elegance, balance, and classic structure. Dedicated stewards of their property, the Novaks have farmed organically since 1985 and have pioneered the restoration of their local watershed.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
