From a hot vintage and incredible any way you look at it, the 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon has that laser-like focus of a cooler year, yet the voluptuousness and richness of a warmer year. Smoked black fruits, coffee, truffle and pen ink-like aromas and flavors all emerge from this massive, incredibly full-bodied effort and on the palate, it carries itself perfectly with a weightless, yet decadent texture, masses of polished tannin and blockbuster length. More classic and textbook than the 2007, it is every bit as good. Enjoy it over the coming two decades or more. Drink now-2033.

Saturated deep ruby. Brooding, backward nose hints at deep black plum, cassis, graphite and nutty, spicy oak. Fat, sweet and superconcentrated, with an almost citric suggestion of acidity and chewy dry extract contributing to the impression of structure. Wonderfully bright for such a ripe wine, and explosively long on the aftertaste. Along with its considerably power, this promises to deliver great class in an almost Medoc-like way.

Richly aromatic, this brims with dark berry and currant aromas and flavors, shaded with espresso and dark chocolate overtones that play against somewhat gritty tannins. A meaty note adds extra depth as the finish lingers on and on against the tannins. 3,400 cases made.

About This Producer

No Washington winery commands more attention from wine collectors than Quilceda Creek, with repeated 100-point scores and subsequent appreciating bottle value. Since 1978, the Alex Golitzin and his son Paul have been lauded for their flagship Cabernet Sauvignon, which is elevated by the Bordelais practice of declassification of up to one third of production into a second label each year. The fruit for their 4,000-case production is sourced from the finest vineyards on the far side of the Cascade Mountains, and the Golitzins are meticulous in their oversight of the viticultural practices. Driven to produce the greatest wine possible, Alex and Paul "know what they want in a wine and what to do to get it."

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
