Shows the great, embedded structure of the vintage, with a strong graphite undertow pushing the layers of blackberry, boysenberry and plum fruit, while additional sweet spice, mocha and bittersweet cocoa notes fill in the background. Packed with fruit and terroir, with a gorgeous mouthfeel. 1,500 cases made.

Showing superb Grenache character, the 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee de Mon Aieul offers tons of charm in its kirsch, jammy blackberry, spice, licorice and underbrush-scented bouquet. This flows to a full-bodied, focused and elegant version of this cuvee that has fine tannin, good concentration and fabulous purity. While not hitting the heights of the 2003, 2007 or 2010, it's a textbook example of this cuvee that will have 20-25 years of overall longevity.

($93; 100% grenache) Deep red. Musky cherry and blackcurrant aromas are complicated by sassafras, garrigue and anise. Saturates the palate with suave red and dark berry preserve flavors, hints of candied licorice and lavender, and velvety tannins. Seems to gain sweetness on the finish, which is striking for its mix of power and balance. There's nothing hard about this.

Excellent bottle. Rich nose with strong dried fruit and barnyard notes as well as some smoke and salinity. Nice lengthy finish with satisfying grip.

Youthful fruit profile, soft tannins, but missing deeper flavor profile of CDP.

About This Producer

Pierre Usseglio et Fils has been a family-run domaine since Francis Usseglio released his first vintage in 1949. Today, with brothers Jean-Pierre and Thierry Usseglio at the helm, Pierre and Fils has become one of the top producers in Chateauneuf-du-Pape.

The vineyards comprise 17 parcels over 23 hectares on some of the best terroir in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The wine is vinified traditionally using natural yeasts, low doses of sulfur, and is aged mostly in old oak foudres. The results are world class wines that are testament to Chateauneuf-du-Pape as one of the world's most famous terroirs.

Wine Varietal: Rhone Blend

"Rhone blends" are typically red wines comprised of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre in varying proportions. However, the red blends may also include any of the traditional varieties grown in the Rhone Valley such as the 14 allowed in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation. There are also Rhone blend roses which use the same varieties as their red counterparts. White Rhone blends are typically some combination of Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Grenache blanc, and lesser varieties.
