The 2005 Merlot is looking sensational, and far better than I thought last year. There are 3,000 cases of this wine, which is aged in 85% new Taransaud barrels. Blended with 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine reveals distinctive black cherry and berry notes intermixed with chocolate, mocha, caramel, and scorched earth. The wine is full-bodied, fleshy, but has underlying acidity and a long, layered finish. This wine can be drunk now or cellared for another 15+ years.

($90) Good red-ruby. Dark fruit aromas complicated by violet, bitter chocolate and minerals; more complex than the young 2006. Tightly wound but already sexy, with fresh acidity and underlying minerality giving the dark fruit flavors excellent definition. This seems distinctly sweeter than the 2006 owing to its early harmoniousness, but is actually lower in pH and higher in acidity, according to Jayson Pahlmeyer.

Deeply structured and brooding, with smoky black currant and mineral aromas and firm but layered blackberry, cedar and Asian spice flavors that finish with chewy tannins. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 3,265 cases made.

About This Producer

Pahlmeyer started over 20 years ago when former trial attorney Jayson Pahlmeyer decided to turn his passion for wine into a career in Napa Valley. After studying viticulture and oenology at the University of Bordeaux, Pahlmeyer returned to the United States and produced his first wine (a Bordeaux blend) in 1986. Under the guidance of Pahlmyer, and current winemaker Erin Green, this reputation endures, annually establishing the estate as one of the finest producers of Bordeaux blends, Merlot, and Chardonnay in California.

Wine Varietal: Merlot

Merlot shares many of the same profile descriptors as Cabernet Sauvignon including plum, blackberry, chocolate and mocha. Bordeaux's Right Bank, such as in Pomerol and St.-Emilion, is the traditional home to this red grape, but it is grown all over the world. Merlot is either bottled on its own or is blended with other red grapes.
