The 2005 Merlot from their holdings on Atlas Peak has fresh brambleberry, mulberry and mocha-infused fruit, medium to full body, excellent acidity, and wonderful vibrancy and vigor. It is youthful at age 10. The alcohol level is listed at 15.2%, but again, it is completely hidden by the wineâÂ?Â?s wealth of concentration. This wine can be drunk now, but promises to hold and even evolve for another 10-15 years.

($90) Good red-ruby. Dark fruit aromas complicated by violet, bitter chocolate and minerals; more complex than the young 2006. Tightly wound but already sexy, with fresh acidity and underlying minerality giving the dark fruit flavors excellent definition. This seems distinctly sweeter than the 2006 owing to its early harmoniousness, but is actually lower in pH and higher in acidity, according to Jayson Pahlmeyer.

Deeply structured and brooding, with smoky black currant and mineral aromas and firm but layered blackberry, cedar and Asian spice flavors that finish with chewy tannins. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 3,265 cases made.

Deep dark purple with thin, medium legs. Was honestly expecting more of a fruit bomb-ish experience here but this was nearly devoid of tannins and very light on its feet, very elegant. This beautiful floral characteristic dominated the palate, with raspberry and caramel flavors. Very different from the kind of Napa Merlot the kinds are making these days. Alcohol was well masked the aromatics again very floral and rich. Finished medium length. Drinking near peak.

Ready to drink this beautiful Merlot which looks and seems more like a Cabernet Sauvignon rather than a Merlot. Full body, dark and dense, somehow chewy tannins and great core of blue and dark fruits. Enjoy !

About This Producer

Pahlmeyer started over 20 years ago when former trial attorney Jayson Pahlmeyer decided to turn his passion for wine into a career in Napa Valley. After studying viticulture and oenology at the University of Bordeaux, Pahlmeyer returned to the United States and produced his first wine (a Bordeaux blend) in 1986. Under the guidance of Pahlmyer, and current winemaker Erin Green, this reputation endures, annually establishing the estate as one of the finest producers of Bordeaux blends, Merlot, and Chardonnay in California.

Wine Varietal: Merlot

Merlot shares many of the same profile descriptors as Cabernet Sauvignon including plum, blackberry, chocolate and mocha. Bordeaux's Right Bank, such as in Pomerol and St.-Emilion, is the traditional home to this red grape, but it is grown all over the world. Merlot is either bottled on its own or is blended with other red grapes.
