Professional Reviews For This Wine

Wine Advocate | Rating: 100

This amazing wine puts on a display of fireworks in terms of its aromatics, with a stunning nose of blue and black fruits, forest floor, flowers and earth. Dense purple, full-bodied, rich, moderately tannic and super-concentrated, this is a profound Pomerol that still needs another decade of cellaring. This is possibly the greatest Lafleur of the modern era, rivaling the 1982 and 2000. Forget it for another 5-10 years and drink it over the following quarter-century

Exhibits a complex nose of crushed blackberry, dried flowers and dark chocolate. Full-bodied, with a rich, powerful palate. Tannic and muscular, with great length. Superracy. Builds and goes and goes. So fine and beautiful. Mythic.

($1; 895) Saturated, bright ruby-red. Brooding, liqueur-like aromas of blackberry, cassis, smoked meat, licorice and menthol. Compellingly dense, sweet and concentrated, with silky fruit that saturates the entire palate without any excess weight. A very backward, firmly structured wine that offers an uncanny combination of early sweetness and firm but harmonious acidity. The wine's dark fruit and licorice flavors spread out impressively on the back end, which features huge but smooth tannins and terrific length and verve. Wow! This will be long-lived.

Full and sweet and pretty luscious with a firm tarmac spine. Lots of energy. Lively and zappy. With some transparency. Quite forward.

About This Producer

Located in the Pomerol appellation, Chateau Lafleur is among the few properties whose quality often rivals or exceeds that of the famed Chateau Petrus. The small Lafleur estate is owned and operated by Sylvie and Jacques Guinadeau and only produces about 1,000 cases per year. The property was previously known as Le Manoir de Gay in the 1700s and was subsequently divided into Domaine de Lafleur and Chateau Le Gay by the Greloud family. It was Henri Groloud's son-in-law, Andre Robin, who contributed his personal motto, "Qualite passe quantite" (quality surpasses quantity), to the winemaking practices at Lafleur. The estate has benefited from additional help from winemaking consultant Jean-Pierre Moueix since the 1980s. Chateau Lafleur produces about 250 cases of a second label called Les Pensees de Lafleur consisting of grapes that do not meet the standards of the chateau's grand vin.

Lafleur's 4.5 hectares of vineyards consist of approximately 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc situated on a plateau rich in gravel and clay as well as potassium and iron deposits. The wine offers a strong perfume from the Cabernet Franc portion of the blend and reveals flavors of concentrated black fruits, spice and minerals. It is a structured wine, displaying refined acidity, ripe berries, and focused tannins. Chateau Lafleur can age for up to 50 years in select vintages.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
