A glorious effort, the 2005 Roberta's Reserve State Lane Vineyard (91% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc) gets my nod as one of the finest Merlot-based wines being made in Napa. A Right Bank-styled offering (think Pomerol), it boasts huge aromas of chocolate, mocha, sweet black cherries, and black currants. Dense, opulent, full-bodied, and fleshy with extravagant depth and richness that hides some rather serious tannins, this stunning red can be approached now, but it should be at its best in 3-4 years, and will keep for 20-25.

($150; 91% merlot and 9% cab franc) Good deep ruby-red. Penetrating aromas of blackberry, violet, licorice, bitter chocolate and espresso. Less fleshy today than the cabernet but with a compelling, subtle sweetness to its dark berry, brown spice and bitter chocolate flavors. Very sexy, juicy wine that spreads out to saturate the palate without conveying any sense of heaviness. Finishes broad and ripe, with excellent structure and grip. This is downright serious and ageworthy for Napa Valley merlot. Don't make the mistake of opening this wine in the next couple of years: this baby needs bottle aging.

Complex and well-structured, with dried red currant and Asian spice aromas and dense, tightly wound flavors of black cherry, mineral, cedar and sage. The tannins are ripe but muscular. Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

Well made wine, but not to my taste. Tight with more acidity than fruit. Surprising for a Merlot-based wine. Left the bottle open overnight and somewhat better after 24 hours.

About This Producer

The historic State Lane Vineyard, in the heart of the Napa Valley, was first leased by Beringer Estates in 1972 and was used to launch Beringer's famous Private Reserve Cabernet. The Kapcsandys purchased the property in May, 2000 and in 2001 teamed up with legendary winemaker Helen Turley and her viticulturist husband John Wetlaufer. After careful research, they discovered a unique vineyard with multiple micro-geological conditions and decided to redevelop the vineyard for its utmost potential and produce world-class red wines under the Kapcsandy label. The first two vintages - 2003 and 2004 - were produced by Helen Turley. For 2005 Rob Lawson, the winemaker at Napa Wine Company for the past 16 years, was brought aboard and in 2007, Denis Malbec became the sole winemaking consultant.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
