The 2005 Proprietary Red Estate, which is a blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc, spent 20 months in 100% new oak. There are 800 cases. The wine comes across as very Pauillac-like, with notes of cedar wood, creme de cassis, licorice and graphite. It is still opaque purple, full-bodied, pure, richly textured and impressive. It's accessible and drinking well already, but promises to evolve for at least another 15 or more years.

Tightly wound, yet weaves together a complex maze of dried currant, savory herb, cedar, spice and loamy earth flavors that are intense, focused, young and compact. Needs time. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

($115) Full medium ruby. Aromas of blackberry, graphite, licorice, tar and violet. Quite suave and bright on the palate, with an enticing inner-mouth lavender character lifting the dark berry, tar, fresh herb and bitter chocolate flavors. There's a firm acid spine for aging, but here the acidity is very nicely buffered by the wine's material. Finishes with firm tannins and lovely lift and precision. In comparison to this sample, the 2006 is much tighter and less pliant today-still in need of time to absorb its oak. This has turned out very well.

A wonderfully expressive wine, with enough bite from the cab sauv and francs, rounded and mellowed by ample merlot. A fantastic effort that should age well. Bright and vibrant now, but I think better in another 5 years.

Great structure, smooth, not overwhelmingly powerful, but very clean. Not the greatest value for the price, but a very good wine.

About This Producer

The historic State Lane Vineyard, in the heart of the Napa Valley, was first leased by Beringer Estates in 1972 and was used to launch Beringer's famous Private Reserve Cabernet. The Kapcsandys purchased the property in May, 2000 and in 2001 teamed up with legendary winemaker Helen Turley and her viticulturist husband John Wetlaufer. After careful research, they discovered a unique vineyard with multiple micro-geological conditions and decided to redevelop the vineyard for its utmost potential and produce world-class red wines under the Kapcsandy label. The first two vintages - 2003 and 2004 - were produced by Helen Turley. For 2005 Rob Lawson, the winemaker at Napa Wine Company for the past 16 years, was brought aboard and in 2007, Denis Malbec became the sole winemaking consultant.
