International Wine Cellar | Rating: 93

Opaque ruby. Deeply pitched dark fruit preserve aromas show a superripe, decadent character, with notes of candied flowers, olive paste and pipe tobacco adding complexity. Broad, fleshy and smoky on the palate, offering an array of dark fruit liqueur and exotic spice flavors and a touch of candied licorice. Finishes with serious cling, plush tannins and resonating smoke and berry compote notes.

Manages to be dense and elegant at the same time, playing its dark plum, fresh fig and spice flavors against superslick tannins, letting it all expand beautifully on the long, expressive finish.

I thought this wine was slightly more one dimensional than the others. Less of a nose but many of the same characteristics -- blackberry, sweet dark pitted fruits, and a kiss of vanilla. The flavor was probably the best integrated of the entire flight, but lighter with less layers. Silky smooth. There was an interesting spice on the finish. Couldn't place this but my initial thought was coriander seed. Finish was incredibly smooth. My number 3 WOTN but the group's WOTN.

Opaque color. Cedar and alcohol on the nose and palate are the first impressions. After two hours of air, the dark fruit, vanilla candy and spice comes through. Drink now as it will not likely get any better.

About This Producer

In 1998 Jayson Woodbridge released his first vintage, one Cabernet, made from his own 10-acre Kayli Morgan Vineyard. The goal was to create a "Right Bank" style Cabernet from those clay soils. With the second vintage, he earned scores in the mid-90s and sold the wine for double the previous vintage. In addition to the Cabernet Sauvignon Kayli Morgan Vineyard, Woodbridge produces a Howell Mountain Cabernet from The Ark Vineyard and a single-vineyard Shiraz from his Ancient Way Vineyard in Barossa Valley.

Wine Varietal: Syrah

While the rest of the world is calling it "Syrah," Australia and South Africa stick to "Shiraz," their name for the same grape. Previously it was thought that the name Shiraz originated from a city in Persia where the Syrah grape was believed to have originated. Recently U.S. and French researchers demystified the name debate when they discovered that the Syrah grape was indigenous to France. Intense, robust and sometimes referred to as "manly," Syrah grows principally in the Northern Rhone. The spicy, peppery grape also grows abundantly in Australia, South Africa, and California, where it takes on a softer, thicker character than its French version. Typical descriptors for Syrah include blackberry, dark chocolate, mint, eucalyptus, smoked meat, black pepper, liquorice, and cloves.
