The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Kayli Morgan is perfection! It was too easy to deliver the ultimate three-digit score. A sensational nose of pen ink, graphite, forest floor, creme de cassis, a hint of white chocolate, and cedar wood are all present in this majestic, multi-layered wine built like a skyscraper. The freshness is still a component part of this full-bodied, stunningly concentrated wine that is pure Napa purity, power and compelling intensity. This is a great wine, still youthful at age ten, and capable of at least another 20-25 years of evolution.

($250; 15.5% alcohol) Bright, deep ruby-red. Knockout aromas of sappy red fruits and menthol; reminded me of a Pomerol. Lush, deep and energetic, with terrific floral lift and detail to the superconcentrated raspberry, spice and dark chocolate flavors. Finishes lush and broad, with palate-staining persistence and terrific verve. This spent 40 to 50 days on its skins, according to owner Jayson Woodbridge. The best vintage yet for this lush and satisfying bottling. (The 2006s had just been sulfured at the time of my visit and were unavailable for tasting.)

Offers delicious pure, ripe and fleshy Cabernet fruit, delivering layers of currant, wild berry and a hint of raspberry, with mineral, pebble and cedary oak. All of it unfolds gracefully, with a supple, caressing texture.

Deep purple color. Drinking well now, not too tannic. Bouquet of deep red fruit. Notes of blackberry and graphite, incredible finish.

Consumed many years ago at HY's house with CU. Very massive. Fruit bomb is an accurate description. Not sure I like this style.

About This Producer

In 1998 Jayson Woodbridge released his first vintage, one Cabernet, made from his own 10-acre Kayli Morgan Vineyard. The goal was to create a "Right Bank" style Cabernet from those clay soils. With the second vintage, he earned scores in the mid-90s and sold the wine for double the previous vintage. In addition to the Cabernet Sauvignon Kayli Morgan Vineyard, Woodbridge produces a Howell Mountain Cabernet from The Ark Vineyard and a single-vineyard Shiraz from his Ancient Way Vineyard in Barossa Valley.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
