Professional Reviews For This Wine

International Wine Cellar | Rating: 90

($130) Good deep Ruby-red. Slightly high-toned aromas of black cherry, menthol and nutty oak. Broad, dry and rich, with licorice and mineral notes complicating the dark fruit flavors. Very good, but can't match the estate's superb 2004 for sheer palate-saturating material. I found myself wishing for a bit more definition and grip. Owner Jeff Smith told me that this vineyard was harvested on November 17, with the fruit still in good condition despite five separate rain events in the final weeks of the growing season.

About This Producer

Proprietor Jeff Smith has developed Hourglass Cabernet into one of the most anticipated releases each year since its debut in 1997. Winemaker (and Jeff's fellow band mate) Bob Foley gets the most out of this vineyard, named for its location at the narrowest point of the Napa Valley, just north of St. Helena. Production is consistently under 1000 cases.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
