Aromas of blackberry, meat and earth follow through to a full body, with velvety tannins and a rich finish. Decadent, balanced and very approachable already. I thought it would have been a little better than this.

($70-$87) Good red-ruby. Redcurrant, leather and game on the expressive if slightly rustic nose. Sweet and concentrated but a bit youthfully aggressive, and not showing the refinement or definition of the 2006. Strong nutty oak component. Finishes with substantial tannins that are a bit richer and more fully buffered by the wine's middle-palate material than those of the 2006. It will be interesting to compare these two vintages in ten years or so.

Wine Advocate | Rating: 89?

Tasted on three separate occasions, this cuvee exhibits a dark ruby color (with much less saturation than many wines of the vintage) as well as a distinctive, herbal, meaty, horsey nose, medium to full body, good depth, power, and richness, and soft tannins. The wine's rustic aromas and earthy style are intriguing and provocative. While an excellent effort, the 2005 Gruaud Larose is not one of the stars of the vintage.

TASTING NOTE: Very pretty aromas of flowers, berries, currants and light raisins. Full-bodied, with soft and round tannins and lovely ripeness. Attractive and balanced. Score -( 89-91). (Wine Spectator, June 30, 2006 )

About This Producer

The phrase "The King of Wines..." adorns its label, but this isn't Bordeaux Budweiser. In fact, St. Julien's Second-Growth-classified Chateau Gruaud Larose was known as "the wine of kings" back in the late 1700s and continues this legacy today. The most notable recent example is President Chirac serving 1990 Gruaud Larose to President Clinton at Parisian bistro L'Ami Louis in June, 1999.

The chateau occupies 84 hectares on a gravel-rich plateau in St. Julien neighboring Chateau Beychevelle. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, the wines are often complex, opulent and flamboyant and always age worthy. The finest examples of Gruaud Larose in recent memory are 2010, 2000 and 1990.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
