Ripe and juicy, with firm, intense, polished black cherry, wild berry, currant and black licorice flavors that are delightfully elegant and refined. The finish goes on and on. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot.

Even better, and also youthful, is the 2005 Proprietary Red, which is a blend from their Yountville vineyard of 94.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 2.7% Merlot and 2.7% Petit Verdot . This wine was aged 20 months in 70% new French oak, with 815 cases produced. The wine is dense purple and full-bodied, with notes of incense, charcoal, blackcurrants, damp earth and forest floor. It is rich, powerful and surprisingly backward and youthful. This wine definitely does not taste like it's already ten years of age, but rather 4-5 years. I'd give it another 2-3 years of cellaring and drink over the following 15-20 years.

($145; 94% cabernet, 3% petit verdot and 3% merlot) Good full medium ruby. Superripe aromas of black fruits, mocha, flint and hot stones, with a faint herbal nuance; slightly porty. Then fat, full and soft, in a distinctly creamy style, with flavors of dark fruits, melted dark chocolate, maple syrup and cough medicine. This reminded me of a St. Estephe wine from a very ripe year. Finishes rich, chewy and powerful, with slightly dry-edged but supple tannins and notes of mocha and crushed rock.

Multiple berry aromas climb from the glass. Opulent mouthfeel. Beautiful, complex texture. Smooth, long finish. Flavors of blackberry, cassis, and plum.

About This Producer

Gemstone Vineyard is a small, family-owned grape grower and producer of estate wines. Although they makes a small quantity of Chardonnay, their focus is on crafting richly textured red wines from Bordeaux varietals grown on their 16 acre hillside property in the Yountville appellation of Napa Valley. Philippe Melka has been the winemaker since the 2005 vintage. The founders are Suzie and Paul Frank who have since passed the baton to current proprietors Carole and Michael Marks.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
