This property, which has benefitted enormously from tremendous investments from the Rothschild family that owns Lafite, has turned out a dense purple-colored wine in 2005. Offering broad, expansive, supple and silky tannin as well as loads of Asian plum sauce, blackcurrants, and sweet cherries, this wine is seductive, medium to full-bodied, and luscious. This successful effort from the Rothschilds should continue to drink well for at least another two decades.

Dark in color, almost black, with beautiful aromas of spices, blackberry and milk chocolate. Full-bodied and very silky, yet tannic, with a wonderful texture. This is long and caressing. Gorgeous. 20,000 cases made.

($70-$75) Medium ruby. Superripe aromas and flavors of blueberry, blackberry, bitter chocolate, licorice, menthol and Asian spices. Big, chocolatey and rich; much broader and more backward than the Carruades I tasted next to it but without that wine's perfume and light touch. Finishes chewy and youthfully medicinal, with a classic dryness and substantial tannins that call for seven or eight years of cellaring.

Very dark blackish crimson. Quite evolved on the nose. Sweet. Very opulent and gorgeous. Big and bold and utterly seductive. Just very slightly short but there is not a jot to complain about!

This wine is in prime form right now. I don't like older wines. The tannins have settled nicely and are very smooth. The wine still has good fruit, currants, fruitcake, plums and blackberries. The best thing is the cinnamon on the finish. It's a shame that I will never be able to buy this wine at the price I paid a few years ago.

Dark red color with brown hue. Nice nose of graphite, dirt and dark fruits. Wonderful smooth texture and weight on palate. Lots of nice fruit as well. Medium length finish fell a bit short. Soft tannin, easy drinking.

I thought the wine was a bit flat and the tannins a bit too strong. This is a wine that needs to age a few more years at least. Could taste the potential of this 2005, but if you have some of this, don't open it for a couple years

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
