The superb, dense ruby/purple-colored, full-bodied 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon (a 220-case lot of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon) reveals elegant notes of spring flowers, lead pencil shavings, blueberries, black currants, and a subtle hint of smoke. Noble sweet tannins are noticeable, and the wine displays a restrained use of oak (100% new French barrels were utilized), beautiful purity, a multi-dimensional texture, and a savory, long, classic finish. It should age effortlessly for 15+ years.

Smooth, rich and polished, with layers of green and black olive, spice, currant, cedar and mineral flavors that are complex and deep while retaining an elegant mouthfeel. Ends with supple, graceful tannins that glide on the finish. 200 cases made.

Saturday night, I hosted a small blind tasting of some recent 2005 cali cab purchases to determine my future purchasing preferences. The three wines were: Buccella Cabernet, Maybach Materium & Corra Cabernet. Previously I had only tasted the 2004 Corra by itself and absolutely loved the wine. This time I wanted to see if Corra was really that good as well as determine if I will be purchasing the other two wines in the future. Four of us tasted and completed a simple ranking from 1 (best) to 3 (worst). The results were as follows: (5pts) 2005 Corra Cabernet Even blind the Corra performed as I expected, unbelievable. The nose was a beautiful mixture of fresh berries and floral notes. It had layer upon layer of flavors, none overpowering the next. The strength of this wine is the subtle finesse of all the components in complete harmony. Corra will definitely continue to be a part of my cellar. (7pts) 2005 Buccella Cabernet The Buccella was a close second in everyone's opinion. It was masculine in comparison to the feminine style of Corra. This wine was almost chewy in consistency with a rich core of fruit. I enjoyed this wine thoroughly, yet I question the future direction of the wine without Mark Herold at the helm. Anyone know what vintage was his last? (12pts) 2005 Maybach Materium Finally and probably the most disappointing for me was the Maybach. The wine was very tannic and austere. You could tell that it would age for awhile; however, I kept asking myself if I didn't like the base components now would I like them aged? It was a good wine, yet not in the company of the other two. At the $100+ range, I expected more and will spend my money elsewhere the next time. Overall, it was a wonderful night of good wine that helped fine-tune my ever expanding annual cabernet purchase that I keep failing to contain.

OUTSTANDING. Decanted for 2+ hours, still very structured. Great fruit but not overpowering with great balance of oak. Still young

About This Producer

Veteran winemaker Celia Welch launched her own label in 2004, after 20 years of making premium wines for others including DR Stephens, Cornerstone, Hollywood & Vine, Keever, Husic, and of course Scarecrow. Her extensive experience in winemaking world began with a degree at UC Davis in 1982, followed by tenures at wineries in Australia, New Zealand, the East Coast and Northwest. Upon returning to California, she spent time assisting in wine production in Napa and Sonoma before becoming an independent consultant in 1995. Under the Corra label, she produces a Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc from Napa Valley and Oakville vineyard sources, respectively. Her goal with these two small-production bottlings is to give the consumer an ultra-premium wine experience.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
