Really tight now, but packed with dark fig, currant, espresso, licorice and chocolate notes. Superfleshy but seriously structured, there's layer after layer of sweet spice, fruit and minerality pumping through the finish, with lots of latent depth and power. Should be a monster - similar to the 1990 - when it reaches its peak.

($80; 65% grenache, 20% mourvedre, 10% syrah and the rest "the others") Deep red. Explosively perfumed nose offers a profound bouquet of red and dark berries, licorice, incense and musky underbrush. Broad, palate-staining raspberry and blackcurrant flavors are enveloped in velvety tannins, with suave anise and Asian spices adding complexity. A huge but balanced-even graceful-wine, with a finish that refuses to let go of the palate. This remarkable young Chateauneuf has the sheer sex appeal to enjoy young but also possesses superb cellaring potential. I'd hold mine.

Hitting a natural 15.5% alcohol, Paul-Vincent's 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape is decidedly more elegant and finesse-styled now than it was on release, where it was more dominated by its tannic structure. Still a youthful ruby color, it offers up a perfumed bouquet of kirsch and blackberry-like fruits, licorice, incense, Asian spice and forest floor. This is followed by a medium to full-bodied, seamless, elegant wine that's lost all of its baby fat, yet still has a core of sweet fruit, fine tannin and a balanced, harmonious feel. It's not a powerhouse, and is drinking nicely today, with another decade of longevity.

Hint of sharpness vanished completely after an hour of decanting. Silky smooth, warm ripe berries and plums. Number 1 of Wine Spector's 2007 Top 100 for good reason. Wish I had much more in storage.

Drinking beautifully. Has added weight and complexity. Great Kirsch flavor. At peak.

About This Producer

Clos des Papes is indisputably one of the reference points for premium Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Owned by the Avril family, who has been making wine in Chateauneuf-du-Pape since the beginning of the 18th century, this property maintains its distinction of premier status not only because of its exceptional product, but also due to the generosity and graciousness of its owners - Paul (father), Vincent (son) and Madame Avril.

The wine is a majority Grenache with Mourvedre and Syrah, but the Avrils also have some plantings of Muscardin, Counoise and Vaccarese that they do not hesitate to use to enhance the blend. Sourced from 18 separate parcels (one of which was part of the old walled-in papal vineyard, hence the name) it gains its unique character from some sandy soils in the west and southeast and the more limestone/clay earth of the rocky north and northeast. There is no "Reserve," per se, as the Avril sell off in bulk to negociants what they do not feel is worthy to include in their one and only top blend.

Wine Varietal: Rhone Blend

"Rhone blends" are typically red wines comprised of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre in varying proportions. However, the red blends may also include any of the traditional varieties grown in the Rhone Valley such as the 14 allowed in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation. There are also Rhone blend roses which use the same varieties as their red counterparts. White Rhone blends are typically some combination of Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Grenache blanc, and lesser varieties.
