Professional Reviews For This Wine

Burghound | Rating: 93-96

(from 2 similarly sized parcels - 1 at the top and the other at the bottom of the slope. ) Note that I was shown two versions of this wine, one from Domaine fruit and another that was purchased. Prost indicated that there might be two wines released or they might be blended. The wine reviewed here is from Domaine fruit and was significantly better than the purchased example. A ripe, reserved and cool nose of flat out gorgeous complexity leads to beautifully delineated, powerful and robust flavors that somehow manage to remain understated on the hugely long and spicy finish. This has the 'wow' factor in spades and is a strong candidate for the Clos de Vougeot of the vintage (along with the Leroy and Dr. George Mugneret versions).

CS Bags of sweet clove-spiked black fruit, very rich aromas. Warm and inviting but not casual. Sweetly aromatic red fruit in the middle then a wonderfully delicate and subtle length. Very very fine melting tannnis. Intense flavours with a remarkable lightness of touch. (JH)

Deep ruby-red. Knockout nose offers black cherry, violet, truffle, minerals and dark chocolate. Suave on entry, then quite backward in the middle following the expressive nose, and dominated by its firm tannic spine. The very unevolved flavors of black cherry, minerals and spices need more elevage But this should be strong.

Wine Advocate | Rating: 89-91

Notes of tallow, charred meat, and blackberry rise from the glass of Bouchard's 2005 Clos Vougeot crafted from purchased fruit. Broad and expansive, rich, substantial and creamy in texture on the palate, this displays impressively concentrated black fruit, meat, and savory, soy-like essences and a solid finish. It ought to repay at least 8-10 years in the cellar, although one must add that a track record cannot yet have been established for the quality of wine that Bouchard Pere & Fils has begun crafting of late.

About This Producer

Eighty-six hectares of Grand and Premier Cru vineyards. One hundred thirty total hectares in the Cote d'Or. Eighty crus produced each vintage. Two hundred seventy-five years of history. Bouchard Pere et Fils is truly an institution in Beaune. The Maison was founded by father and son Michel and Joseph Bouchard in 1731, and the family wine merchant business has grown steadily ever since, taking any opportunity to add to its vineyard holdings along the way. Not to be completely overshadowed by its wines, Bouchard conducts business in the very center of Beaune in the old Chateau de Beaune, whose storied past rivals that of the Maison. In 1995, the Champagne family of Joseph Henriot took control of Bouchard, resulting in improvements in quality, not to mention the addition of more top level vineyard sites. Reds of particular interest include the flagship Beaune Greve Vigne de l'Enfant Jesus and the Chambertin-Clos de Beze. As for whites, the Meursault Genevrieres, Meursault Perrieres, Chevalier-Montrachet and Montrachet are all great interpreters of their particular sites, exhibiting the many nuances of grand and premier cru Chardonnay.

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
