Professional Reviews For This Wine

Wine Advocate | Rating: 95

The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Paradise Hills Vineyard (1,200 cases) reveals a chocolatey espresso roast note with mocha, blackberry and cassis, high tannins, but full body, superb concentration, purity, and an almost Graves-like scorched earth character. This wine needs 3-4 years of bottle age, and should last 25-30 years.

($185) Good deep, saturated ruby. Aromas of currant, bitter chocolate, violet and tobacco. Juicy and penetrating, with firm-edged, slightly green acidity that has not yet harmonized with the wine's fruit. This very young wine will need extended time in bottle to come together. Claude Blankiet noted that the substantial spring rain in 2005 caused the vines "to go crazy," producing a big crop that required a lot of work to control the ultimate yields. A good bit of 2005 wine was ultimately declassified (the equivalent of about 600 cases), he told me, and when Michel Rolland helped out with the final blends, he added some cabernet sauvignon to the Rive Droite cuvee "to give it more middle." The 3.68 pH of this wine is unusually low.

Very nice -- big, bold cab that is well integrated with tannins, fruit and oak. Coat staining on your teeth!

Wasn't going to open another for several more years but "noblesse oblige". Unchanged, still closed and tannic, but I believe will round out with a few more years...at least!

Really nice nose, complex and pleasurable. Nice fruit on palate, a bit thin overall but real nice backbone. An elegant wine.

About This Producer

Located in the western hills of Yountville, in the foothills of the Mayacamas range, Blankiet shares a founding date with Arietta. In 1996, the husband and wife team of Claude and Katherine Blankiet, with the aid of viticulturist David Abreu, and winemaker Helen Turley, created a stable of wines that validate the extraordinary terroir of their 16 acres of vineyards. The first eight vintages were made by Turley, but now the winemaking team consists of consulting oenologist Michel Rolland and winemaker Martha McClellan-Levy.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
