Professional Reviews For This Wine

Wine Advocate | Rating: 94

The sensational 2005 Cote a Cote Proprietary Red (a 670-case blend of equal parts Mourvedre, Grenache, and Syrah) boasts an inky/ruby/purple hue in addition to a big, sweet bouquet of roasted meats, tar, camphor, creme de cassis, and smoke. The wine is rich, full-bodied, layered, and exceptionally well-balanced and intense. It should drink beautifully for 10-12+ years.

($75; 34% grenache, 33% syrah and 33% mourvedre) Inky violet. Powerful, syrah-dominated bouquet offers cassis, bitter cherry, flowers and cracked pepper. Firm dark fruit flavors open to reveal sweet blackberry and plum, with slow-mounting spiciness. Wound up tight right now but there's clearly excellent material here. Finishes with a palate-staining cherry pit quality and superb persistence.

Supple licorice and pepper in the nose, has a bit more tannin than I'm used to.

Rich, intense, powerful and concentrated, with dense blueberry, tar, loamy earth and spice, with a solid wall of tannins. Needs air and time. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre.

About This Producer

Stephan Asseo's adventure began in 1982 with a winemaking education from L'Ecole Oenologique de Macon in Bugundy and the subsequent establishment of a small empire in Bordeaux, including Chateau Fleur Cardinal. With a true desire to be more innovative than the French AOC law would allow, Asseo gained a reputation as a maverick vigneron and set out a world wide quest for great terroir.

After searching for over a year, the St. Emilion native fell in love with the unique terroir of Paso Robles and built L'Aventure Winery to pursue his ideals as a winemaker. L'Aventure's flagship Estate Cuvee (a blend of Cabernet and Syrah) has incredible track record 94-98 point scores each vintage since 2002. Robert Parker has reported that Asseo "continues to go from strength to strength, producing a fabulous portfolio of wines that makes L'Aventure one of the bright, shining reference points for the region. This is one of the California Central Coast superstars, and the wines are worth every cent."

Wine Varietal: Rhone Blend

"Rhone blends" are typically red wines comprised of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre in varying proportions. However, the red blends may also include any of the traditional varieties grown in the Rhone Valley such as the 14 allowed in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation. There are also Rhone blend roses which use the same varieties as their red counterparts. White Rhone blends are typically some combination of Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Grenache blanc, and lesser varieties.
