Professional Reviews For This Wine

Wine Advocate | Rating: 98

The 2005 L'Ermita comes from a parcel of 70-year-old head-pruned vines of which 85% is Garnacha, the balance Carinena and Cabernet Sauvignon. Inky purple-hued, it has a totally seductive perfume of slate, black cherry, black raspberry, and toasty new oak. Tight but complete, give this sensational effort 10-12 years to fully express itself and drink it through 2045.

($650) Bright ruby. Powerful cherry and dark berry aromas display a brooding, deeply concentrated character, slowly revealing exotic floral and Indian spice qualities. Sharply focused, palate-staining red fruit flavors deliver uncanny power as well as finesse. Finishes with stunning focus and thrust, leaving mineral-drenched red fruits in its wake. An utterly remarkable wine that bears a shocking price tag. (The Rare Wine Company, Sonoma, CA)

Bright and juicy, this red brims with blackberry and raspberry fruit, accented by smoke, mineral and floral notes. It's tender and fresh, yet has enough tannins for grip. Not a powerhouse, but just sings through the finish.

About This Producer

With Alvaro Palacios' background, it's no surprise he's leading the pack of new superstar Spanish winemakers. The industry is in his blood, as his family owns respected Palacios Remondo in Rioja. Family ties don't produce great wine, though, and Alvaro has done plenty on his own to bolster his qualifications. He studied enology in Bordeaux, then worked at Chateau Petrus under Jean-Pierre Moueix, honing his winemaking skills. Instead of taking his experiences back to his family's estate, he blazed a new path straight to Priorat's steep hills and terraces. In 1990 he bought his first vineyard, Finca Dofi, and soon after added to it what has become his most acclaimed source, L'Ermita. The vineyard, planted between 1900 and 1940, faces northeast and offers up Garnacha meriting mass critical acclaim. Alvaro's lofty vision has been to craft a wine somewhere between a Petrus and a Grange; a cursory glance at the reviews makes his accomplishment immediately clear. His three wines: Les Terraces, Finca Dofi, but most importantly L'Ermita, have launched him to absolute cult status.
