This has a deliciously pure feel, with juicy, inviting green plum, ginger, heather, creamed pineapple and Jonagold apple flavors all melded together and gliding through the lengthy finish, which echoes with lilting flowers and dried citrus notes.

Served from an ex-chateau bottle. The 2005 Chateau d'Yquem is similar to the 2006 in that it deserves aeration. The bouquet is well-defined, although there is clearly some new oak that will need another two or three years to fully integrate. The aromatics seem to show a little more botrytis than the 2006, richer and headier. The palate is unctuous on the entry, beautifully balanced and lacquers the mouth in pure honeyed fruit interlaced with white pepper, quince jus and nectarine. Comparing the two, the 2006 has a little more tension and race, although the 2005 has a touch more persistency. The 2006 may well turn out to be the better of the two vintages in the long run (hence the plus sign), although the 1995 is a Yquem with panache to spare. Drink now-2040. Tasted March 2014.

Very pale straw gold. Very thick, grainy texture like orangey buttery sauce, the sort of thing you'd serve with crêpes suzette. RS 130g/l, TA 4 g/l [ie 6.1 g/l as tartaric]. Nice delicacy too. Very long indeed though not really ready.

Yellow, light colour. Nose is medium strong even at this age, honey and lighter fruit plus some white flowers. It has urprisingly fresh with good balance of sweetness and acidity! Medium body, some white blossom followed by light dried fruit. Long aftertaste with some aromatic champignon flavour. Brilliant with great potential, one to have in any serious Sauternes / Barsac cellar.

About This Producer

Chateau d'Yquem is world famous for its sweet wine, which commands some of the highest prices on the market. Established in 1593, the chateau is located in the Sauternes region of Bordeaux and is the only property given the highest rating of Premier Cru Superieur. The estate contains a 110-hectare vineyard planted with 80% Semillon and 20% Sauvignon Blanc. The wines are created from botrytized fruit that is picked by hand in several passes by up to 150 harvesters. The "Noble Rot" (Botrytis Cinera) depletes the water content in the berry, concentrating the natural sugar levels. The resultant wine's high sugar content is matched by high level of acidity, allowing the wine to age for more than 50 years in the best vintages. The opulence of Yquem's youth turns complex, rich and honeyed as it ages. Chateau d'Yquem's second wine, Ygrec Y, is a dry Bordeaux Blanc.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
