Kicking off a series of wines that I consider to be as good as it gets, the 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve incorporates slightly more Grenache than normal and checks in at over 16% alcohol; certainly you'd never know it by tasting it however, and it's perfectly balanced. Still inky purple in color, it possesses beautiful freshness and focus, with killer notes of blackcurrants, liquid violets, licorice, crushed rock and cured meats all soaring from the glass. As with the '09 and '06, it has off-the-charts concentration, thrilling mid-palate depth and serious structure. Give it another handful of years and it will be one of the longest lived Chateauneufs out there.

Quite lush for a 2005, with rich, forward raspberry and boysenberry fruit layered with mocha, fruitcake and Christmas pudding notes. Intense graphite underpinning keeps it all honest. The superlong finish is loaded with raspberry ganache and Turkish coffee notes. Just grows and grows in the glass. Grenache and Syrah.

($420) Inky violet. Extremely fragrant bouquet offers a potent mix of dark berries, kirsch, licorice and pungent herbs, with a strong mineral undercurrent. Deep, impressively concentrated cassis and candied cherry flavors are framed by big, velvety tannins, picking up mocha and black cardamom on the finish. Boasts great sweetness but no overripe character. Pretty stunning stuff.

About This Producer

Located in the northern part of Chateauneuf du Pape and owned by the Daumen family since 1905, the domaine began bottling a small percentage of wine under its own label in the 1960s. Current owner Jean Paul Daumen's father, Maxime, built new cellars and installed foudres to accommodate the expanding production. The domaine's vines cover approximately 30 hectares and average 60 years of age.
Yields are kept low and all grapes are de-stemmed prior to fermentation. 80% of the production is done in old oak foudres with the remainder in neutral barrels. Biodynamic principles are used in both the vineyards and cellar, and no SO2 is used during the vinification process.

Wine Varietal: Rhone Blend

"Rhone blends" are typically red wines comprised of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre in varying proportions. However, the red blends may also include any of the traditional varieties grown in the Rhone Valley such as the 14 allowed in the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation. There are also Rhone blend roses which use the same varieties as their red counterparts. White Rhone blends are typically some combination of Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Grenache blanc, and lesser varieties.
