International Wine Cellar | Rating: 94-96

(16% alcohol, compared to 15% to 15.7% for most of the other 2005 zins from this winery; from vines planted in 1885) Bright ruby-red. Compellingly sappy aromas of cherry, blackberry and blueberry, with a near-porty ripeness. Then flamboyantly sweet and ripe, but with superb acidity giving a penetrating quality to the wine's superb fruit. The limestone soil here gives energy-and a low 3.35 pH-to this wonderfully sweet wine. Finishes with outstanding persistence. In just a few short years, this vineyard has emerged as one of California's great zinfandel sources.

A brilliant offering, the 2005 Zinfandel Ueberroth Vineyard emerges from a 19th century hillside vineyard planted in pure limestone. It offers a dense ruby/purple color, wonderful freshness, and a strong personality displaying notes of black raspberries, cassis, pepper, dried herbs, and earth. A stunner, it will be one of the longest lived 2005s, lasting for a decade or more. Previously recommended: As indicated last year, 2004 was a terrific vintage for Turley Zinfandels. If they can still be found, I would opt for purchasing them over their lighter 2005 counterparts.

Intriguing aromas of smoky meat and briary blackberry lead to powerful and layered wild berry, blueberry and licorice flavors that end with zesty tannins.

This is my favorite type of Turley zin. Sweet, sappy and extracted blackberry and black cherry fruit. Notes of kirsch, pine pitch, sweet tobacco, white pepper and baking spices add complexity. Well-balanced so not cloying. Long satisfying and flavorful finish keeps you coming back for more. Very, very enjoyable.

About This Producer

Making "big reds" has been Larry Turley's passion since giving up his co-ownership of Frog's Leap Winery in 1993. Turley Wine Cellars is run by Larry and his wife Suzanne. Larry's sister, winemaker Helen Turley, made the wines here until 1995. Now the honor goes to Ehren Jordan, who also makes wines for Neyers. With a focus on producing old-vine Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, Turley sources fruit from vineyards some of which date back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. Both the Zinfandels and Petite Sirahs have a dark, saturated, inky color, with intense fruit flavors that make unforgettable statements about the power and complexity these varieties may attain.

Wine Varietal: Zinfandel

Zinfandel is a black grape variety of Croatian descent. With no ties to France, Zinfandel has actually been linked to the Primitivo grape of Italy, but California is where the majority of Zinfandel is grown. This variety possesses extremely versatile characteristics from light and fruity, to jammy and ripe with high alcohol. Growing Zinfandel can be difficult due to its packed clusters and short stems, which make the vines prone to uneven ripening and mildew. Preferring a warm climate, Zinfandel is also grown in other western states in the United States as well as in Australia and South Africa. Typical descriptors for Zinfandel include red berry fruits, raspberry, blackberry, anise and pepper.
