Professional Reviews For This Wine

Wine Spectator | Rating: 92

Very ripe fruit aromas of currant and mineral, with a hint of mint. Full-bodied, with beautiful tannins and a balance of fruit that is wonderful. Class and refinement. You don't have to spend a fortune to drink excellent Tua Rita. Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The 2005 Perlato del Bosco (65% Sangiovese, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon) is a finessed, elegant version of this wine. Perfumed aromatics and lively minerality buffer a core of sweet, dark fruit. In keeping with the personality of the vintage, this is a somewhat linear Perlato del Bosco, but it offers outstanding harmony and plenty of style.

About This Producer

Located in Suvereto, a small medieval Tuscan town on the south coast of Bolgheri, Tua Rita is best known for its 100% Merlot, Redigaffi, which earned a perfect 100-point score from Robert Parker in the 2000 vintage. However, all the bottlings from this 55-acre estate deserve attention.

Rita Tua and her husband Virgilio Bisti bought their property in 1984 and planted 45 acres of the clay and silt soil to Cabernet and Merlot. Stefano Chioccioli presides over winemaking and produces just 3,400 cases annually, making Tua Rita wines some of the most difficult finds in Italy.

Wine Varietal: Sangiovese

Italyâ??s most popular grape, Sangiovese is the top grape used in Tuscany including Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and many of Italyâ??s â??Super Tuscans.â?? At least 14 clones of Sangiovese exist which are grouped into the Sangiovese grosso and Sangiovese piccolo families. Sangiovese thrives in a warm climate and consists of over 10% of Italyâ??s vineyard acreage (covering almost a quarter million acres). Over the past decade Sangiovese has become increasingly popular and successful in California as well. Typical descriptors for Sangiovese include candied or dried cherry, citrus, leather, violets and tea.
