The 2005 Troplong Mondot is a blend of 90% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc. It was emotional tasting this wine, thinking of the late Christine Valette, who made this compelling wine while battling with considerable courage against an insidious disease. It is a great effort and a superstar of the vintage. Dense purple, it offers notes of white chocolate, blackberry, cassis and licorice as well as a hint of truffle and some subtle background oak. Full-bodied, multi-layered, and spectacularly pure and rich, it is a tour de force, and a great tribute to an incredible woman. Remarkably youthful, this wine probably needs another 4-8 years of bottle age, and should keep for 20 or more years. Kudos to the late Christine Valette!

($229-$400) Full ruby-red. Spectacularly ripe nose offers plum jam, minerals, licorice, mocha and a whiff of game, all lifted by exotic flowers. Explosively ripe and sweet in the mouth, with uncanny fullness and depth to the flavors of raspberry, smoke and milk chocolate. A blockbuster of a wine with a three-dimensional texture and outstanding weight but with almost magically ripe acidity giving great precision to the flavors and drawing out the finish. Incredible melting tannins saturate the palate and front teeth. Wonderfully suave wine, the best I've ever tasted from this chateau.

Exhibits aromas of coffee, ripe fruit, wild mushroom and blackberry. Dark and very complex. Full-bodied and chewy, yet velvety and beautiful, with intense flavors of blackberry, chocolate and tobacco. Very, very long This is layered and gorgeous. 6,250 cases made.

Very dark crimson. Very full and dense and serious!!! Dry rather than sweet. Great undertow of strength yet fabulous balance. Lots of dry tannin on the finish – this wine isn’t nearly ready – but it has real complexity. Long. But it clenched up in the glass.

Sweeter, lighter fruit than many of the others with a ton of tannin that will of course calm down with age. Just didn'tget this one right now.

About This Producer

This St. Emilion estate, which dates back to 1745, was once part of the larger domaine that included Chateau Pavie. A century later it was bought by Raymond Troplong, whose name was added to the label. Later, Alexandre Valette, a Parisian vintner, bought the estate in 1980, his great-granddaughter Christine took over the estate. In 2006 the vineyard was selected to Premier Grand Cru Classe status. Thick limestone and dense clay make this vineyard perfect for growing Merlot (which comprises 90% of the vineyards). Wines produced from this estate are powerful and contain complex tannins. The remaining plantings are divided equally between Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1985 the chateau introduced the second label Mondot, which has gained clout as a grand cru in its own right. More recently Christine Valette has produced a rose called Le Clairet de Mondot.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
