Wine Spectator | Rating: 95

Black licorice, tar and fresh mushroom aromas lead to a full-bodied palate, with soft, velvety tannins and a long, caressing finish. Balanced and juicy. Velvety and attractive, yet powerful and structured.

Proprietor Eric Prissette has fashioned a sensational 2005 with the assistance of consultant Stephane Derenoncourt. It boasts a deep purple color as well as a perfume of charcoal, smoked herbs, crushed rocks, blackberries, ripe cherries, and espresso beans. This full-bodied, formidably endowed St.-Emilion possesses high tannin, abundant extract, superb texture, and admirable purity. A beauty, it may be the finest Rol Valentin made to date.

($79-$100; 14.4% alcohol, with a pH of 3.55) Good deep red-ruby. Wild aromas of blackberry, dark raspberry, mocha and meat. Sappy, penetrating and deep, with highly concentrated flavors of dark raspberry, truffle, game, minerals and flowers. Offers a superb blend of richness, creamy sweetness and acidity. Finishes very broad and very long, with considerable power. This is downright sexy juice but should really be laid down for at least a decade. "The 2000 still needs ten years, and you should forget about the 2005 for a long time," noted Prissette, who added that the 2002 is tasting great right now.

About This Producer

A favorite from St. Emilion, this wine offers that complex matrix of accessibility and age-worthiness inherent to this appellation. Since Eric Prissette a former football player - European style - bought the property in 1994, there has been an intense focus on producing "the most magnificent, flamboyant, and concentrated wines possible." To that end, the wine sees frequent punch-downs during fermentation, malolactic fermentation and aging in 100% new oak on the lees, and micro-oxygenation. The high caliber of these wines contrasts sharply their thoroughly reasonable prices. This is an 85-90% Merlot production, so expect a plush entry and roundness of palate.

Wine Varietal: Bordeaux Blend

Six varieties are permitted to be used in a red Bordeaux blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and, less frequently, Carmenere. Each lends a specific characteristic to the finished blends, most of which are dominated by large percentages of either Cabernet Sauvignon, which brings aromatics and age-ability, or Merlot, which adds softness and body. In the Bordeaux region, Cabernet blends are found on the Left Bank and Merlot on the Right.
