The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Galitzine Vineyard comes from the fifth leaf of this estate vineyard and in this vintage contains 4.5% Merlot. The wine was aged for 22 months in 100% new French oak. Opaque purple-colored, its distinctive aromatics leap from the glass. Toasty oak, scorched earth, a hint of truffle, black cherry, black raspberry, and blackberry liqueur aromas are quite mesmerizing. On the palate, this sizable effort is firm, full-bodied, and structured, demanding 6-8 years of cellaring. It falls a bit short of the flagship Cabernet Sauvignon in terms of complexity but bear in mind that this is still a very young vineyard. It should be hitting its stride by 2015 and remain at that level through 2035.

Bright ruby-red. Multidimensional nose offers blackberry, graphite, violet and dried herbs; boasts floral high tones the 2004 can't match. Wonderfully suave and silky, with superb depth and penetrating sweetness to its black fruit flavors. A step up in the finesse of its grain from the 2004 version. The compelling rising finish features huge but ripe, horizontal tannins that are supported by strength of fruit and superb persistence.

Explosive blueberry and jam nose. Incredibly balanced mouth feel. Supple flavors of dark fruit and well integrated oak. Long, long, long finish.

About This Producer

No Washington winery commands more attention from wine collectors than Quilceda Creek, with repeated 100-point scores and subsequent appreciating bottle value. Since 1978, the Alex Golitzin and his son Paul have been lauded for their flagship Cabernet Sauvignon, which is elevated by the Bordelais practice of declassification of up to one third of production into a second label each year. The fruit for their 4,000-case production is sourced from the finest vineyards on the far side of the Cascade Mountains, and the Golitzins are meticulous in their oversight of the viticultural practices. Driven to produce the greatest wine possible, Alex and Paul "know what they want in a wine and what to do to get it."

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
