A penetrating nose of rich black fruit and polished licorice, blackberry and currant. Beautiful stuff with amazing concentration and smoke. Low acidity makes it very approachable.

The 2005 Syrah Griffin's Lair, from a hillside Sonoma Coast site that is wind-swept, exhibits beautiful flowery bacon and lead pencil notes intermixed with some meat juices, blackberry, and cassis. The wine is full-bodied, rather opulent, fleshy, and mouthfilling with no hard edges, and should drink beautifully for 5-8 years.

($55) Inky ruby. Powerful, fruit-driven bouquet shows a wild, spicy red and dark berry quality, along with an exotic sandalwood tone. Lush, seamless and intensely red berry-flavored, with velvety texture and completely integrated tannins. A very suave, sexy syrah, finishing with persistent strawberry and powerful Asian spice character.

A rich, loamy, earthy style, with cedar, tobacco, dried currant, sage and spicy mineral and pebble flavors. Much like a Hermitage in its flavor profile and complexity. 646 cases made.

Site Blog: The Wine Forum Not sure if it was corked, but was not its usual self....too funked out at first, did not blow off much but it did last a few days later when I tried it and it mellowed some of the funk.

Possesses a dense ruby/purple color. It's velvetly smooth and delicously rich with hints of licorice, blackberries, tar and spice. A stellar effort from one of my favorite Pax vineyard sites. This wine lingers on the finish for nearly a full minute. Profound!

About This Producer

Pax Mahle produced a wide selection of vineyard-designate Syrahs from Northern California under this label for many years before leaving to begin another project, Wind Gap. Under the Pax label, he utilized indigenous fermentations, minimal handling, unobtrusive use of French oak and bottling without filtering or fining. Great care was always taken in the vineyards to produce the best fruit possible by maintaining the vines on an individual basis and ensuring low yields. In addition to many Syrahs, Pax also produced several white wines including Roussanne, Viognier, and a white blend. In 2009, with the departure of Mahle, the brand was re-named Donelan Wines.

Wine Varietal: Syrah

While the rest of the world is calling it "Syrah," Australia and South Africa stick to "Shiraz," their name for the same grape. Previously it was thought that the name Shiraz originated from a city in Persia where the Syrah grape was believed to have originated. Recently U.S. and French researchers demystified the name debate when they discovered that the Syrah grape was indigenous to France. Intense, robust and sometimes referred to as "manly," Syrah grows principally in the Northern Rhone. The spicy, peppery grape also grows abundantly in Australia, South Africa, and California, where it takes on a softer, thicker character than its French version. Typical descriptors for Syrah include blackberry, dark chocolate, mint, eucalyptus, smoked meat, black pepper, liquorice, and cloves.
