Professional Reviews For This Wine

Vinfolio | Rating: 94

Farmed at less than 2 tons per acre from a hillside parcel of the renowned Rincon block. Extraordinary perfumed nose of boysenberry, plum, and black cherry gathered within a framework of violet and lilac- touched smoky bacon. Delicate undertones of star anise and Asian spice. Cool plum and blackberry flavors drape themselves across the palate, with a train of tobacco, smoky blackberry and bacony black plum. The integration of focused fruit, perfectly balanced acidity and the hide-and-seek of toasty mocha and coffee bean round out this tidy package. A wine that demands a bit of time in the glass. 220 case production.

About This Producer

Founded by Master Sommelier Emmanuel Kemiji in the late 1990s, Miura has explored Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Bordeaux varieties from top quality designated vineyards up and down California from Pisoni and Talley in the south to Hudson in Napa Valley. Winemaking is handled by Kemiji's former UC Davis roommate, Byron Kosuge, owner of B. Kosuge. Miura was one of the first sommelier-created domestic brands to come to market.

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
