Professional Reviews For This Wine

Wine Spectator | Rating: 97

Intense and focused, complex and full-bodied, with tiers of spicy black cherry, wild berry, raspberry and plum, at points subtle yet expansive, with touches of anise, mineral, sage and cherry rhubarb. The finish sails on and on.

Wine Advocate | Rating: 96

The 2005 Pinot Noir Blue Slide Ridge displays the sexiest, most exotic side of Pinot Noir with its dense, dark raspberry, floral and forest floor notes intermixed with spice and fresh mushrooms. Its sweet, broad fruit, deep ruby/plum color, terrific body, and lush, heady mouthfeel make for a remarkable wine. As it sits in the glass, smoky blueberries and wet stones, even a gun flint-like aroma, seem to emerge.

About This Producer

One of the most influential mavens of modern California winemaking, Helen Turley creates in Marcassin wines that are among the most sought-after in California. Though the wines are made following a traditionalist Burgundian style, they are unique, complex representations of California Pinot and Chardonnay. Turley's straightforward winemaking philosophy is, "...great vineyards, meticulously farmed, limited yield, long hang time and natural yeast."

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
