($155) Medium red. Riper, darker nose features blueberry, spices and a sexy earthy perfume. Supple and juicy, with excellent spicy lift to the blackberry, blueberry, game and mineral flavors. Sweeter and denser than the village example but more noteworthy for its insinuating soil tones than for sheer size-or is this simply in a shell today? The long, resounding, dry finish features very fine-grained tannins and lovely lift. This, too, seems to be shutting down in the bottle. But it should be long-lived.

Very glorious fruit expression on the nose. Complete. Spreads right across the palate. Real delicacy and lift. Lovely stuff. Still lots of tannin but well hidden. Thierry Bruin thinks it will close up soon but it’s still pretty lovely now. (JR)

Lovely, restrained, subtle, starting to drink well.

Popped and poured. Dark ruby. Deep nose of t and a, blue fruits and spicy oak. Still completely primary and has yet to absorb the oak. Distinct minerality in the mouth, well structured, but not lean. Good balance between acidity and tannins. Long finish. Long life ahead.

About This Producer

This vineyard near Morey St Denis in the Cote de Nuits produced stellar wines in the 1940s and fully deserved Grand Cru status, yet this was not achieved until 1981. Under owners Roland de Chambure, the Saier family and oenologist Thierry Brouin, the "sleeping beauty" vineyard succeeded in making a comeback after having fallen into disrepair in the 1970s. In 1996 after being sold again, the new owners, Gunter and Ruth Freund, restored the chateau and re-established the successful path that Lambrays has since followed.

The wines are studies in finessed concentration and exhibit an enchanting blend of fruit, spice and mineral that continues to evolve on the palate and in the cellar. In addition to the Morey St Denis reds, Lambrays also produces a few Chardonnays from Puligny Montrachet.

Wine Varietal: Pinot Noir

Notorious for its fickle growing patterns, Pinot Noir vines prefer long, cool growing conditions and tend to mutate easily, leaving behind numerous clones and inconsistent flavor profiles. Although it is one of the three major varieties used in Champagne production, Burgundy is the traditional home of Pinot Noir. The 30-mile stretch of hills known as the Cote d'Or is valued as the world's premier production area. Pinot Noir is planted all over the world. In the United States, Sonoma, the Russian River Valley, Carneros and the Willamette Valley produce top-notch wines from this variety. Other notable countries include New Zealand, Australia, and Chile. Typical descriptors for Pinot Noir include strawberry, raspberry, cherry, mushroom, and meaty notes.
