($150) Good deep ruby-red. Blackberry, licorice, nutty oak and a whiff of baked bread on the sexy nose, lifted by ethereal dried rose and iris nuances. Then fat, large-scaled and generous on the palate, with concentrated black fruit and tar flavors lifted by flowers. Finishes with huge but sweet tannins, terrific backbone and outstanding persistence. Kongsgaard, who describes this wine as a "chocolate and cherry dessert," notes that he has vinified this fruit in the past but never bottled and sold it on its own until this vintage.

The debut vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2005, has turned out beautifully. Made from fruit grown in David Abreu's vineyards, this Cabernet Sauvignon (which includes tiny amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot) comes from three distinct vineyards, one above Dalla Valle, and two on the back streets of St. Helena. A deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by notes of espresso roast, fudge, forest floor, creme de cassis, and smoked meats. The wine is layered, full-bodied, and rich. A tour de force in Cabernet Sauvignon, it can be consumed over the next 15-20 years.

Smooth-textured, with herb, dried currant, vanilla bean and earthy mineral flavors that lend a drying edge to the flavors. Decant for now. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 400 cases made.

Nice mid-weight Cabernet with good complexity. Consumed over two hours. Pronounced and pleasant eucalyptus note for the first hour. Mid-palate was initially a little weak but filled in during the second hour. Tannins became more aggressive during the second hour, cutting a few points off the score.

About This Producer

Fifth-generation Napa natives John and Maggy Kongsgaard produce The Judge, Chardonnay, VioRous, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Low yielding vineyards and traditional low-intervention winemaking techniques produce powerful, graceful wines which are high intensity expressions of vineyard and variety.

The core of their endeavor is the ten-acre vineyard they planted in the late 1970s on a rocky hilltop in southern Napa Valley which has belonged to the Kongsgaard family since the 1920s. In addition to these family acres, they direct the farming under long-term contract on another seven acres in Carneros and three acres near St. Helena. The winery, on the eastern rim of Napa Valley, is a cave drilled into the volcanic rock. Production is limited to what they can make with their own hands.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
