About This Producer

Created in 1911 by a split of family vineyards, this estate has built its stellar reputation on the strength of its long-lived Rieslings. First under the direction of Johann Josef Prum, and followed by subsequent generations, the winery is now maintained by Dr. Manfred Prum. The 33 acres of estate vineyards on the steep, rocky slopes of the middle Mosel produce 13,000 cases annually, running the full spectrum of the Pradikat. These vineyards boast 70% original rootstock, and low-yielding old vines. The resulting wines are known for their full-flavored fruit, spiciness, and slow development, which greatly rewards patient cellaring.

Wine Varietal: Riesling

Styles of Riesling range from bone-dry to very sweet. Riesling thrives in cooler climates with plenty of sun exposure and protection from the wind. Along the Mosel River in Germany and in France's region of Alsace, this variety has seen historic success. Riesling is also grown in Austria, Luxembourg, northern Italy, Australia, New Zealand, United States, and Canada. There are many grape names that use the term "Riesling" which are not true Riesling such as Welschriesling, Schwarzriesling, Cape Riesling, and Gray Riesling. White Riesling, also known as Johannisberg Riesling, is true Riesling. Typical descriptors for the varietal include apple, pear, peach, apricot, petrol, flint, steel, and gunmetal.
