Vinfolio | Rating: 93

Blended with 2% Cabernet Franc, it shows a dense core of concentrated blueberry, currant, and blackberry on the nose. Supple, sleek black fruits, sandalwood and finely framed tannins are found on the palate

Very tightly wound, with a bundled mix of spicy dried currant, sage, mineral and deep, rich berry flavors that slowly unfold, offering more depth, richness and persistence on the finish.

While outstanding, the two 2005 Cabernet Sauvignons are not as impressive as Etude's 2004 efforts. The 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa's deep ruby/purple hue is followed by notes of black currants, lead pencil, tobacco leaf, and spice box. Well-made, with medium body as well as good fruit, texture, and depth, it should drink nicely for 12-15+ years.

($85) Good bright ruby. Ripe black fruits, mocha and chocolatey oak on the nose; showed a slightly medicinal note of chocolate/cherry liqueur with aeration. Very ripe and creamy in the middle in the character of so many 2005s, with a strong chocolate note and a slightly exotic, roasted quality. This full, dense cabernet finishes with broad, fine-grained tannins and sound acids but turned a bit chunky with air. (A second bottle, which I rated two points lower, showed a light raisiny note and some dryness on the finish.)

About This Producer

Etude was established in 1982 by wine consultant Tony Soter to produce high quality Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir sourced from top growers. The brand embarked on an estate-focused philosophy in 1999 with the purchase of a former pasture at the base of Sonoma Mountain. The sustainably-produced wines include Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and five estate-grown Pinot Noirs. Additionally, their appellation-focused Cabernet Sauvignon program offers selections from St. Helena, Oakville and Rutherford, as well as a Napa Valley bottling. Winemaker is Jon Priest.

Wine Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is perhaps the world's best known red variety, with its full-bodied, intense profile. An offspring of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, it is the primary grape of Bordeaux's Left Bank (Medoc and Graves regions) and the Napa Valley, but can be found growing all over the world. Typical descriptors for Cabernet Sauvignon are cassis, cedar, mint, black pepper, eucalyptus, and pencil lead.
