(from a 1.48 ha parcel) An earthy yet elegant nose features notes of game, subtle smoke, red, black and blue fruit and briar notes that sit atop concentrated, pure and detailed flavors wrapped in a wonderfully intense, balanced and strikingly long finish. This oozes class and refinement and interestingly, the mid-palate is almost tender yet there is a robust firmness to the massively long finish that lets one know that this is built for the next several decades. Most impressive and in contrast to the Malconsorts, this is even better than what I saw in barrel last year but note that patience will most definitely be required.

($250) Bright red-ruby. Musky, brooding aromas of dark fruits, mocha, spices and minerals; appears to be shutting down on the nose. Dense, large-scaled and packed with fruit and extract. The liqueur-like black raspberry, underbrush and licorice root flavors expand on the back half and go on and on on the aftertaste. Vinified entirely with whole clusters, this wine shows an almost painful intensity today and should really be forgotten for at least a decade. A great young example of this grand cru.

Bright crimson. Very pure and powerful. So clean and brisk with great integrity. Complex already with hints of ripe, slightly bitter zesty fruit – super-ripe plums? oranges? - and an edge of mocha. Racy and the most intriguing edge of playfulness. Not pompous at all. Wonderful wine.

Intensely smoky, and with concentrated black cherry, herb, and brown spice aromas, the Dujac 2005 Clos St.-Denis comes onto the palate quite firm, palpably dense, its structural rectitude, fruit pit notes, stony mineral shadings, and abundant fine tannins all somewhat alleviated by ample glycerin and complemented by the sheer sappy juiciness of its ripe black fruits. This is positively fetal when compared with the Clos de la Roche, but exhibits no less remarkable sheer length. Certainly we're looking at another wine with more than a decade's developmental potential.

About This Producer

Jacques Seysses began his career as a winemaker in 1965 as an intern of Gerard Potel at Pousse d'Or. The experience paid off as he gleaned valuable information from the great Burgundian winemakers of the time. In 1967, he struck out on his own with the purchase of Domaine Graillet in Morey St Denis, which he renamed Domaine Dujac. The first vintage, in 1968, proved a complete disaster, but Jacques rebounded quickly, producing one of Burgundy's best wines in 1969. As the domaine gained recognition, the estate and its production grew. Today Dujac stretches over 12 hectares of prime Burgundy real estate in eleven appellations, including eight Grand Cru holdings, and turns out just under 5,000 cases a year.

The winemaking philosophy at Dujac is open-minded, experimental, and successful. A true family affair, winemaking is directed by Jacques and son Jeremy, and Jeremy's wife Diana, an oenologist trained at UC Davis, manages the cellar and laboratory. Since 1986, the domaine has been in "lutte intege," a regime combining organic, biodynamic, and integrated pest management strategies to produce the highest quality fruit. Pinots and Chardonnays from Dujac reflect this approach, garnering high scores and praise from critics year in and year out.

In 2004, the Seysses family began acting as negociants, partnering with local winegrowers in the Cote d'Or to produce wines bearing the Dujac Fils & Pere designation.
