Professional Reviews For This Wine

Vinfolio | Rating: 92

Griffin's Lair is one of the top sites on the Sonoma Coast for Syrah and when combined with Karen Culler's excellent reputation with the varietal, good things are expected. No disappointment here! It has received 90-92 points from Robert Parker.

Very dark in color, primal aromas of tarry, smoky cherry and leather. The palate is beautifully focused black raspberry, smooth yet firm on the finish.

About This Producer

Winemaker Karen Culler left Mondavi to begin making her own wines in 1997. Her premiere release Syrah was one of the most sought-after wines of the vintage. Culler produces Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and a red blend named La Palette.

Wine Varietal: Syrah

While the rest of the world is calling it "Syrah," Australia and South Africa stick to "Shiraz," their name for the same grape. Previously it was thought that the name Shiraz originated from a city in Persia where the Syrah grape was believed to have originated. Recently U.S. and French researchers demystified the name debate when they discovered that the Syrah grape was indigenous to France. Intense, robust and sometimes referred to as "manly," Syrah grows principally in the Northern Rhone. The spicy, peppery grape also grows abundantly in Australia, South Africa, and California, where it takes on a softer, thicker character than its French version. Typical descriptors for Syrah include blackberry, dark chocolate, mint, eucalyptus, smoked meat, black pepper, liquorice, and cloves.
