($35) Deep ruby. An expressive, spicy bouquet comprises strawberry, redcurrant, cinnamon and nutmeg, plus hints of tobacco, graphite and raw meat. Vibrant red fruits on the palate, deepening with air and taking a turn toward cherry, with brisk minerality giving lift and focus. Finishes on a sweet kirsch note, with impressive energy and persistence. This was fermented with 50% whole clusters.

His 2005 Syrah McDowell Valley (from vines planted in both 1911 and 1945) exhibits similar intensity, with a saturated ruby/purple color and notes of bacon fat, blueberry, and blackberry as well as a hint of licorice. It is medium to full-bodied, soft, with silky tannins and good freshness. Drink it over the next 5-7 years.

Wine Varietal: Syrah


While the rest of the world is calling it "Syrah," Australia and South Africa stick to "Shiraz," their name for the same grape. Previously it was thought that the name Shiraz originated from a city in Persia where the Syrah grape was believed to have originated. Recently U.S. and French researchers demystified the name debate when they discovered that the Syrah grape was indigenous to France. Intense, robust and sometimes referred to as "manly," Syrah grows principally in the Northern Rhone. The spicy, peppery grape also grows abundantly in Australia, South Africa, and California, where it takes on a softer, thicker character than its French version. Typical descriptors for Syrah include blackberry, dark chocolate, mint, eucalyptus, smoked meat, black pepper, liquorice, and cloves.
