Professional Reviews For This Wine

Wine Advocate | Rating: 91-93

The 2005 Syrah Eaglepoint Ranch exhibits deep blueberry and blackberry fruit along with floral and crushed rock-like characteristics in the background. This medium to full-bodied, slightly tannic Syrah should age nicely for a decade or more.

($35) Dark red. Wonderfully perfumed nose features intense sandalwood and patchouli-accented cherry and candied plum scents; reminds me of a ripe Dujac wine. Vibrant, incisive and pure, with impressively balanced red and dark fruit flavors, fine tannins and gentle acidity on the finish. A strong, smoky, almost iodine-y quality comes up with air, adding further complexity. This is really impressive.

About This Producer

Wells Guthrie is a fervent believer that great wine begins in the vineyard. In pursuit of this, Copain has sought out vineyards with expositions, soil compositions, climates, clones, and rootstock selections capable of producing wines of distinction and singular character.

Copain's winemaking practices aim to express each site's unique qualities. Copain wines are highlighted by lower alcohols, natural vibrant acidity, gentle handling of the fruit and wine, native yeast ferments and minimal use of new oak.

Wine Varietal: Syrah

While the rest of the world is calling it "Syrah," Australia and South Africa stick to "Shiraz," their name for the same grape. Previously it was thought that the name Shiraz originated from a city in Persia where the Syrah grape was believed to have originated. Recently U.S. and French researchers demystified the name debate when they discovered that the Syrah grape was indigenous to France. Intense, robust and sometimes referred to as "manly," Syrah grows principally in the Northern Rhone. The spicy, peppery grape also grows abundantly in Australia, South Africa, and California, where it takes on a softer, thicker character than its French version. Typical descriptors for Syrah include blackberry, dark chocolate, mint, eucalyptus, smoked meat, black pepper, liquorice, and cloves.
